David Bowie's Heroes: The Musical To Open in March

November 27, 2011

David Bowie has given his permission for his famously avant-garde songs to be turned into a full-scale musical that will be based on the story of Major Tom, the starman and a young man called David.

The show, called Heroes: The Musical, has been described as a futuristic fantasy that does not hearken back to Bowie's glory days but instead celebrates the timelessness of his lyrics.

"We could not really believe it when they gave us permission," Deep Singh, who wrote the musical, told the UK Observer.

"His people had warned us that it was very unlikely that he would be interested and that he had been asked many times before.

"We did not want Mr Bowie to think it was going to be a tribute show, and that seems to have had an effect.

"Mr Bowie's representatives have been incredibly supportive when we have asked them for things and yet hands-off in terms of letting us get on with the project."

The musical, which will feature around 20 songs including "Heroes", "The Man Who Sold the World" and" Let's Dance", will be directed and choreographed by Matthew Gould. It will feature a cast of over 30 performers and a live band.

"We want the audience to become involved with the characters. There is a fear a whole generation might not get to hear Bowie's extraordinary music without a show like this," Gould told the newspaper.

The world premiere will take place in March at IndigO2, which is part of the O2 arena.

Proceeds will go to three charities, the Orpheus Centre, Albert & Friends Instant Circus and Youth Music Theatre UK.

I don't know if this will provoke a comeback

or the final/unceremonius/quiet retirement of Mr.David Jones

anyway, this musical may suck, the songs will be cool, sure, but what's the story of this musical about? the story of Queen's We Will Rock U was awful...

I would never hold my breath, but I'd love this musical to actually turn out a success.

This could be great...or a disaster. I hope they put together a great show because I would certainly see it. In the right hands, it could be a success.

Update: Bowie Denies Report That He Approved Musical

In reaction to news that a David Bowie musical had been planned in London in 2012, the David Bowie Organization released the following statement today: “Neither the David Bowie Organization, nor its co-publishers EMI Music and Chrysalis, has issued a license for a Bowie musical at the O2, as has been reported in the U.K. There are no negotiations pending for a long-running musical featuring the music of Mr. Bowie.” eek

I love David Bowie, and I love musicals, but I'm not sure if I would see this or not if his people are not approving this.

Wow. If David hasn't authorized it, then I am totally against it. Looks like someone totally leaped the fence on this one. But I still think it is a great idea, in the right hands--with David's input and blessing. But, evidently, this ain't the one. razz

For anything, it'll confirm that Lady Gaga definitely copied David's style. These kids today need a musical play like this to educated them a bit.
