Sly Stone - Plain Jane (2011)

My favourite of the three new tracks from Sly's album I'm Back, which was released in August. The bulk of the album consists of quite uninspired re-recordings of the biggest hits of Sly and The Family Stone. That's why I wasn't really interested in this project until I stumbled upon this track a couple of weeks ago. According to the cd booklet Sly plays all the instruments on the three new tracks which were written in 1989-90.

Husky

Sounds very seventies-retro, almost like an outtake from the mid-seventies.

Who is the singer on this track? It doesn't sound like Sly to me, more like a female.

I'm not sure who's the female singer on this track, but guess it's Ava Cherry, since the cd booklet credits her and Eugene Henderson as the only backing vocalists on the album. I'm pretty sure that the speed-up vocals in the verse are Sly's.

Crazy, crazy funk. Just nasty. It was written in that time frame, but it seems it was re-recorded presently as his voice (see Get Away) is that of today. Sly.....RELEASE IT ALL!!

nod I'm quite positive that at least some of these 89-90 era songs (there's supposed to be about 20 of them in total) will be released since since there ain't many more old hit songs to re-record. According to this his also working on an album of entirely new material called Rehab Roadie:

Yeah, it does hint as such in the book. Those 3 tracks are the highlight of that album for a reason. As for that news, which should be a new thread, i couldn't be happier, despite my fears of whether he'll stick it. The main news though is that of the new album Rehab Roadie....hilarious title, but i just want him to have at least one more hurrah. Here's hoping....

'Tis certainly most fonkay, a cool, nasty fonk. Let's hope there's more to come. Against all odds, Sly still seems to be fonkay after all these years cool

Lovin' this. I'd rather hear a whole new CD of Sly's 80's outtakes then hear him attempt a new CD.

Hopefully he can stay on the right track (no pun intended) now that he's supposedly clean.
