Recently I saw that famous b&w photo of many jazz musicians gathered together on the steps - I saw it in the lobby of Enterprise car rental. It didn't have to do with anything else in the room. It's like it's a piece of decoration - here's a landscape photo, here's a geometric design picture, and here's a picture of "jazz." I shook my head at that.

Im not trying to be snarky but, do you not know the name of "that famous photo" or its well known photog? You seem to be looking down upon someone's lack of knowlege about an item you didn't even address appropritely.

And since when does one have to create a whole design scheme to hang "that famous photo of many jazz musicians"?

If you're not trying to be snarky, then what are you trying to be? Can't believe someone wants to pick a fight or assume things about a person online because a photo wasn't "even addressed appropriately." Yeah, I don't know if it has a name, I just know it's a photo of jazz musicians taken in Harlem 1958, row of boys in the front.

I will, however, clarify my point because it does seem to have been unclear. The fact that "jazz" has been reduced to one photo, forever frozen in time, and that the photo and all that it represents have basically become like a piece of furniture or an art deco lamp that makes people feel sophisticated for possessing or displaying - that relates to this thread. Of course, one may have a true connection to or appreciation for to one or many of the artists in the photo, but based on the "whole design scheme" of Enterprise rent-a-car, I took the liberty to conclude that there was no authentic connection.

I am pointing out that there is a tone of haughtiness and judgement in your original post, when one could have been as haughty and judgemental about you. You seem to think some aren't entitled to use, view, enjoy a photograph in the context of a car rental. You have NO knowledge of who hung it or why, but have just made that assertion based on ???

Given that level of presumption and haughtiness, I found it ironic that you failed to even properly identify the photo. One could say that YOU are not knowledgable enough to use, view, enjoy the photograph.

See the problem of "taking liberties?"

That's true...

I think he talks about his hometown because it's such a vibrant music community, but you have a point. nod Detroit is the birthplace of the Motown R&B/soul sound, but would Iggy Pop, KISS, Madonna, Bob Seger, Kid Rock, and Eminem call themselves Motown artists? I doubt it.

typing

Exactly my point.
