Sly Stone Cuts Deal, Avoids Jail

November 16, 2011

Music legend Sly Stone made a plea deal Tuesday that will keep him out of jail after an arrest for cocaine possession.

The 68-year-old musician was arrested in April when Los Angeles police officers found freebase cocaine during a vehicle search.

He pleaded no contest to drug possession charges Tuesday.

Under the terms of the plea deal, Stone must complete 60 days of inpatient drug rehab on top of the 30 days he has already completed.

If he completes the rehab on time, the case will be dismissed.

His lawyers said in a joint statement they were "very pleased with the outcome of this case."

The New York Post reported in September that Stone -- one of the most visible, flamboyant figures of the late 1960s and early 1970s music scene -- was homeless and living in a camper van parked in a residential Los Angeles neighborhood.

A retired couple prepared meals for him and allowed him to use their shower, the newspaper said.

Stone claimed at the time that he was living in the van by choice. "I just do not want to return to a fixed home. I cannot stand being in one place. I must keep moving," he said.

I was talking to someone over the weekend about people in their 50's 60's and older still gettin' high. shrug

Sly Stone's life, his choices, and his consequences. The thing about messin' with drugs a lot of people can't and don't walk away from it, even when they've tried. Sly is a "drug addict lifer", period. The career has long been shot to hell, he's not coming back, folks need to let go and allow Sly to live his life on his terms for good or bad.

It's been said but here we have a bona fide musical genius wasting his prodigious gifts. He should be playing great halls, publishing his memoir and perpetuating his legacy.

Thanx for posting, I was waiting for some news on Sly. Although it's not really news. I understand his comment about needing to move, he has said that before. But what makes this so frustrating is that he should be on the move with a band, touring!
Another comment I'd like to make is that Sly has the same birthday as Terence Trent d'Arby (march 15). Both men had a big start and then went downhill fast. Terence dedicated one of his LPs to "the Pisceans everywhere who will always be understood". My own b-day is only 5 days earlier, maybe that's why I feel for them so much.

What's funny is that even though he's eccentric, when they interview him, he's very coherent and sharp, and I think at times he's enjoying playing up the weirdo card.

His comeback should've happened in the 90s, but I don't think it was just drugs that led to his creative downturn. He just didn't have it in him anymore, and that prob. fueled the drug use even more. When it's no longer fun, and he didn't want to go back to being a DJ. I don't think he can sing the songs anymore ,which doesn't help.

You may be correct on that.

I saw him live in 2007 and he CAN sing if he wants to, but apart from that I think you're right. Author Charles Shaar Murray wrote in his book on Jimi Hendrix that Sly was suffering from the Bad Motherfucker Syndrome, meaning he was so intent on being his own man that he would rather destroy himself than allow anybody to help him. His living in a camper might also be part of that: at least he can have this idea in his mind that he is free. Yeah, I guess he chose this lifestyle.
