Do you care about album art for your MP3s?

Many times while riding the subway, I'll peek over at another person's MP3 player and almost every time the album art is blank:

I'm a bit anal in that I would not upload any music to my MP3 player until I can acquire the approriate artwork to go with it.

Do you care at all? How much of your MP3 collection is missing artwork?

Umm...it depends really. When I'm on iTunes I only really use the list option and MusicBee fucks up all my tags. I really only use my phone to play music, but I'm mostly doing other things on my phone so I never see that part with the artwork anyway.

I was doing at work, but then I had to start from scratch and I was like...'eh...fuck it.'

I do have the right artwork on most of my MP3s, yes. I also like to have the correct date (some reissues of old albums will have the default date as the year of the reissue, not the year of the release of the original album... yeah, that's annoying. mad).

I'm totally anal about release dates and will type in the correct year for songs on compilations (for example where, like you say, the default date is the year the comp was released instead of the actual songs) even before I rip the CD.

This is a good topic! Yes, I definitely care. Since my friend showed me how to put artwork on my ipod, pretty much every album gets something to go along with it visually. Sometimes it's the actual album cover or if it's not that cool, i'll find another picture of them that I like and will download it to the album. I think die hard music fans do this more and casual music listeners (i'm guessing) don't care as much.

No, I just don't like having the wrong information listed in my iTunes.

I am COMPLETELY anal about my ipod as well.

If I have a song that is bootleged or unreleased yet I find fitting artowrk for it.

If the artwork shows up poorly on the Ipod I switch it ASAP.

I love artwork used to give music an extra dimension, I need it for my collection to be complete, I do look at my ipod as a collection.

lol My exboyfriend was the same way. I barely gave a crap about it, but he was like "ohmigod Roni, where is the album art and how come you haven't fixed it? I gotta have mine fixed. See?" Then he'd show me his li'l iPod Touch with all the album art and I'd honk him on the nose gently....love Unnfh. That man was fine....

lurking *ahem* Anyway, iTunes likes to act stupid sometimes when I try and fix the album art. I used the trial of Tune-Up to fix like 25 albums like that. Just as long as I can find the song I want, I kinda don't need the album art. After fighting for years with Media Player getting things wrong, I just let it go.

I'm pretty picky about it, to the point where I feel obligated to even attach artwork and "album information" to mixtapes I have on mine.

...Good to know, I'm not the only nosey person peaking at other people's ipods too lurking

If you will, so will I

Mp3's aren't tangible so i already feel like im missing out so for me its like, "what's the point". I might look at it differently once i upgrade my mp3 player to something that holds more songs though.

Rest in Peace Bettie Boo. See u soon.

I use "MP3tag" to do that. It's free & it works.

Yes I was just thinking about that.

Very anal and get mad when I see a song with improper art like for rips like "mp3hackers.com". That shit gets deleted first thing in the pm.

good thread

if the CD DIES, then the album art, the arty covers, the booklet, the printed lyrics, the good pics and the strong album tracks will all die

welcome to the era of no-lyrics/no-pics/endless filler: MP3 ALBUMS...

I do care about album art. I like my music library to be well organized. Detected albums with no art immediately get fixed by me. I love the look of the Zune software when the albums have art and the photos are ones I picked. This is not the only thing I'm anal about when it comes to my music library though. Great thread topic!

I know what you mean. I also dislike it when you rip a cd and the songs are not in the order that's listed on the cd case. Ugh! Itunes is guilty of this too.

Very true. Some vinyl (like GQ's Two) used to get on my nerve with that. Then you gotta do it yourself!

ANOTHER thing is when someone features somone else in a track and Itunes seperates the artist slot for each feature on a same album....so if I were to look up Kanye West for example "the good life" would not be in his name but in Kanye AND TPain and I have to re-edit the artist name and songtitles altogether. Smh.

All my tags are completely filled in, front & back covers, genre, release date, original date, rating, and comments. I even optimize the covers with Photoshop before including them in the tags. That cover art has gotta POP! Those covers were always too big a part of my music listening experience for me to neglect them in my digital files.

Yes, I care. Depending on how high the album ranks on my favest album ever list I actually have all the art work scanned, if no dlpdf is avaiable.

I need to tag them right as well, as my collection is quite extensive, so I need to, just to stay on top of things.

No. I'm rather annoyed by those small pictures on media player programs always been either really small or from a completely wrong album. Many of the programs are so concentrated on unnecessary stuff like that - album artwork, lyrics, automatic music library organization - that getting them to do basic stuff like playing a goddamn mp3 somewhere on your hard drive can be a really complicated thing to do.

The player program I use looks like this anyway:

Many times I will carry CD booklets to work to scan if I can't find a good enough existing pic online like at the album art exchange site.

Yeah I pay close attention to my cover art. I often still mavel

at the fact that my handheld musicplayer can show me a sharp

electronic reproduction of cover art I love for each song.

I also use single covers and 12" covers, tour ads & concert photos

for live shows, pics from music videos, etc..

Sometimes if it's an older album that came out on vynil first I'll

use the front album cover for the songs on side 1 and the back album

cover for the songs on side 2. and other things like that.

Yeah I love when a song comes up that has a really cool cover

or picture with it. Love it!

I'm pretty picky about the album art I put with my digital collection, and album art gets tagged into the files almost immediately after I rip them. I also tag every song, which some people say creates unnecessarily bigger files, but I don't care. Storage is cheap, and my iPod is nowhere near being full.

Now that most album art is created digitally, the covers are much easier to find. Older ones are not as easy to find because usually someone, somewhere would have to scan them.

Here's a site that I use for most covers. They're pretty particular about what they allow on there:

http://www.albumartexchange.com

Side note: after hundreds of hours fine-tuning my album artwork, along come iCloud and Spotify. I don't know if either of them will really recognize "my" artwork in favor of their own, but we'll see. I don't have an iPhone yet to check it out.
