Kate Bush thinks that albums are dying and will soon be a thing of the past. Do you agree? "The music industry is in such poor shape, it's in a really bad way and a lot of people in the industry are very depressed," Bush said.
"Record sales are very low (and) I think a lot of us fear the death of the album as an art form and I love albums.
"I understand that people want to just listen to a track and put it on their iPod and that's fine, there's nothing wrong with that, but why can't that exist hand in hand with an album? They're such different experiences.
"I suppose the worst case scenario is that people will get to the point where they can't actually afford to make what they want to make creatively. The industry is collapsing."

Why do they always jump to the conclusion? They're in the BUSINESS, they should investigate why certain STORES are not carrying THEIR albums. Investigate that then harp on the albums death for crying out loud. It's a new day, figure out what's wrong. We say the album's "dying" because no one is interested in creating good music - and that's a little wrong because there's still people who invest their time in creating good albums today. I don't know why but I HATE when the artist says something like this.
So no I don't agree. | |

She hasn't really said that they will be extinct here and i'd disagree if she did, but she claims she fears it which i also do, but i am in hopes it won't, as probably she. I agree with all she said, people make great albums all the time, but they don't sell. But as with anything, if the CD album was promoted heavily, it can prevail. She's being affected by it, because she doesn't make a living off of performing live, and as people in the industry have mentioned, music has become a promotion for the live show. To me, this is good for people who enjoy singing live, but seeing as she hasn't toured since 1979, is feeling it hit her pretty good. All she can do is license a song to a movie, or record for a soundtrack if she has no intentions of performing, and she seems like she's going in a Garbo direction, prob. because she's not skinny or young anymore, but she looks fine from the few photos there have been of her in the past 5 years. It is a sexist thing to say, and women get scrutinized far more on weight and age issues than guys, but it does apply to rock guys like Axl Rose, too, as seen in Rock in Rio. If Prince came to a show being overweight, it would be on TMZ in seconds.
It's fine for Trent Reznor or Danny Elfman to have movie soundtracks to work on, and a back catalog of rock songs, but someone like Kate is prob. having a reality check. She's not old, neither's Enya, but they may have to do some live shows in order to maintain the lifestyle they're accustomed to, even if it's a modest one. Privacy doesn't come cheap esp. when you like to cultivate an image, yet keep people at a distance, regardless of whether it's Prince or Kate.
But you know what? The cylinder died. The 78 died. The 45 died. Vinyl was kept on life support by DJs, and now hipsters, audiophiles, and collectors revived it. Back in the day, sheet music was a big seller, people bought the sheet music and learned how to play it themselves, goes back longer than the recording medium does.
Compact discs knocked vinyl out of the stores, even though they made a product that guaranteed repeat customers. Cassettes are dead. She's now functioning as an independent artist, and between what she has in the archives and her back catalog, will re-release some things.
But if she ever announces she's going to do a tour, they're going to sell out in seconds, and I guarantee half the audience is going to be hardcore fans, the other half, famous actors and musicians.
She doesn't spend tons of cash on recording her albums, she might take a long time on it, but had said she has a routine of working on it a few hours a day here and there.
Digital has a history of being unreliable, so the album will never go extinct. It's just that artists are going to have to use social media, websites, TV appearances, touring, and other ways to promote to keep their name out there.
She's good friends with Peter Gabriel so she knows what he does to make a living. He has his recording studio, he produces, he tours, but has put himself in a comfortable position to not have to do a Genesis reunion nostalgia tour.

Very thoughtful post. I agree with a lot of this, but i don't think Kate is affected. I think she's just speaking thoughts. [Edited 11/22/11 16:03pm] This Post is produced, arranged, composed and performed by WetDream | |

it's cyclical. it was all about the single at one time. then it was about the singles and the albums they came from. then it was about the album when the labels stopped pressing singles. and as soon as people were able to find a way (even illegally) to get the single without having to pony up for the whole album that ran for 70-75 minutes with half of that being filler, the industry fell on its ass. it's only now picking itself up little by little by being forced by iTunes, Amazon, etc., kicking and screaming, to make the single a part of its paradigm again.

Just heard the interview... brought it up at the end (and she said no live shows planned) but if you want to give songs about sex with snowmen a listen (and Michael Jackson's Immortal)
