Love these girls to NO END....The Original 4 did their thing and smoked the vocals.

This was the version I first heard as a kid and I dug the film version but when Aretha started singing the song, I don't know, but something came over me like "Aretha KILT it, En Vogue-who?" Don't know why - since I'm a '90s kid and all - but it just did.

En Vogue's is the first version I remember hearing also. I don't recall Aretha's version getting airplay in my area when I grew up (which is not surprising).

I remember renting the movie Sparkle and hearing the song and loving the film version. Then I found the soundtrack on cd and got it. Well, I never really cared for Aretha's version (she varied too far from the melody for me), but I think it's good.

I love this song.

And they're wearing the living hell out of those evening gowns too.

I'm not that crazy about the song itself though.
