What's Up With Nikka Costa? I remembered someone posting a song here that I just hated. It was a desperate attempt at being hip and current. At anyrate, After listening to PRO★WHOA! for the uptenth time, I noticed the song wasn't o the album so I started to research. Well, it appears that Nikka at the last might scrapped the original idea for the album and released an EP instead. Here's the original and final versions of the work:
Promotional release
- "Pro*Whoa"
- "Never Wanna C U Again"
- "Head First"
- "Nylons In A Rip"
- "Not The Only One"
- "Everybody Loves You When You Are Dead" (featuring Sam Sparro)
- "Ching Ching Ching"
- "Stuff"
- "Song For Stadiums"
- "Radio"
Official Release
- "HeadFirst"
- "Never Wanna C U Again"
- "Nylons In A Rip"
- "Pro*Whoa!"
- "Stuff"
- "Chase The Thrill"
Has anyone heard the original configuration? Plus, a lot of the reviews mentioned that Nikka created her own label and would be releasing 4 or 5 EPs in quick succession yet I haven't been able to verify if that's the case. Anyone know what's going on with Nikka?

Wow that's interesting. I guess she got a lot of backlash from that "hip" song... |

I'm guessing all is still going according to plan. I bought the first EP that you have listed above at a gig when she performed here earlier this year.
I found mp3s of the full promo album online earlier this year as well and it doesn't sound that different from the official EP--just that some of the weaker songs were cut. Although I do miss "Not The Only One" and hope it turns up on a future release. |

Kinda looks like it. But it's fun to post something to get reactions because sometimes people do wanna know from listeners what hits them and what doesn't and usually if something doesn't hit the listener, the artist takes it out. I like that approach, rather than "I'll put it out whether you like it or not." You don't always have to be a people pleaser but you can see if constructive criticism can help you decide what you wanna put on an album. |

I think the full album was a major label release in Europe. Since Nikka is an independent artist in the states, maybe she used her creative control to release the music the way she wanted to here as EPs without the radio single. |

Wiki states it was supposed to be a Virgin release but instead was turned into an EP and released via her own Go Funk Yourself Records label. But then, we all know how reliable wiki is. Space for sale... |

I looked at my CD and it says Go Funk Yourself Records on the back and every German site has the full album label listed as Virgin so that part is true. |

Sometimes Wiki DOES have links on their pages, just go to the sources. |

I like Nikka, I've seen her perform, but PRO Whoa is something we used to chant on the schoolyard playground during recess. |

I can't figure her out. I mean, I know she's talented and a great
performer but she and Joss Stone....something prevents me from
liking them.
Disingenuous?
Not sure. |

Joss Stone comes across that way to me, but not Nikka. I've been to many of her gigs and she is not faking the funk. |

I'd take that original version of the album, even with desperate songs. The EP was not enough
If you will, so will I |

she had a song featured in a Tommy Hilfiger ad and then faded into obscurity.
that's what's up with her.

Maybe in your small world... She is one of the funkiest artists out there, and she hasn't put out a bad album yet in my opinion. She's developed a pretty a solid fan base. She doesn't need to be all over the radio to be a success. Change it one more time.. |
