Sammy Davis Jr. on Arsenio Hall I'm going through a period where I'm "studying" Sammy

This was actually the first time I ever heard of Sammy Davis, Jr.

Tommy Davidson or Eddie Griffin need to be in a film about his life. PRINCE: Always and Forever
MICHAEL JACKSON: Always and Forever ----- Live Your Life How U Wanna Live It

No offense, but I don't think either would do him justice. I think Don Cheadle did a pretty good job of portraying him in the HBO "The Rat Pack" movie done in '98. I do, however, believe that out of the two that Tommy would do a better job than Eddie Griffin. I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

I still pick Don to play him in a biopic. He's the only one I can really see doing it.

That man was an ENTERTAINER period! Legendary.

I believe there was talk a few years ago, about Eddie doing it. I don't know, what became of it, though.

He doesn't get enough credit IMO. The man paved the way for so many "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

It's shocking how he's not being recognized especially now.

It's like no one really does their homework on black culture. I find that almost insulting. They namedrop Marvin and Teddy and James as if they "understood" them but they would only mention Marvin and James' social music and Marvin and Teddy's bedroom anthems, never anything further than that.

^True but MJ gets used alot as well for some kinda standard along with/maybe even more than the names you mentioned James,Marvin and so on. Everyone cheats themselves with that kinda thinking. There is more to the culture than just 5 people or whatever! [Edited 11/13/11 11:24am]

That's true. I almost forget to mention they also name drop Michael, Prince and Donny Hathaway also.

Him and those damned cigarettes.
Played this a lot as a kid, still have the record around here.

Believe it or not I have "The Candyman" on my phone-love the song just that much. Sammy was a great entertainer-loved the guy. I still remember his Cosby Show episode.

Donny Hathaway is not over used! In ways he's not used enough IMO.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
He's used as a reference but people are scared to dig in his catalog but believe me they say his name an AWFUL LOT.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Quite frankly I don't hear his name ALOT! I know many people with those sentiments BUT I don't throw away your views. This could be a new thing but either way its been long overdue. In ways he has been forgotten...kinda like Sammy. [Edited 11/13/11 12:21pm]

His music has but his name hasn't lol that's what I meant. I know what you're saying but I always hear people or heard people say his name (especially in the '90s "neo soul movement") but I doubt any of the people besides Badu probably really delve further into what Donny was all about. Stevie gets name dropped like a mother too. But I see those that do only picks certain songs... and they probably don't know Sammy Davis from any so-called song and dance man nowadays.

A lot of neosoul cats name Donny Hathaway. PRINCE: Always and Forever

Okay I'll take you all's word for it...I assume most Neo Soul acts know whats up(shouldn't they) but thats really just a small sector if you think about it! I'm talking across the board and/or mainstream. People who are just constantly thrown around w/o a second thought! [Edited 11/13/11 13:18pm]

American Idol can't stop covering him if that helps.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
'Idol' is a serious, musical institution? I don't watch that show(stone me haha) but like I said this semi-resurfacing of Donnie is kinda new(Donnie's been dead for decades). BUT I'm glad for any mention b/c he deserves it! 'Idol' and a whole lot more shine than he's getting SAME FOR SAMMY! I'm thinking of established artists and industry things(respected writers, publications, hall of fames) to put a serious light on them. [Edited 11/13/11 13:32pm]

Sammy definitely never gets recognized.

You know I didn't want to say anything until I re-read the British GQ article but what the hell! Basically it seems there is some MOB reason. Sure race does play a part in the fact he isn't/wasn't hailed like Sinatra before & after his death! But there has got to be more than just that. I mean this man was FANTASTIC and a STAR!

Yes and he became a great cook as a replacement for that moment in his life. He like other minorities of that time went through alot...

Yeah Frank didn't talk to Sammy for about three years. It was Sammy's wife Altavoise (sp?) that convinced the two of them to work out their differences and Frank had Sammy promise him he'll quit coke and sure enough Sammy did.
