What's become of this forum? This place has been driving me crazy with the number of posts that are just artist/song title in the heading, and then just a YouTube clip in the body of the post. I'm glad people can find music they like on YouTube, but these posts are pretty worthless on a discussion board. Why do the moderators allow this? So many times I click on something assuming there's a discussion or commentary and it's just a YouTube clip. I doubt I'm going to get anything changed around here, but I couldn't help but vent. It just seems like there's so much of this these days around here. No Sonny T?

But it gets people talking about the song, and usually the album it's on. And so i don't see why it's so bad?
Most times i comment on those, i comment about the album to. And it's just like a regular discussion on the board.

So what's the problem?
A posting of a video can spur a conversation, or not... or whatever.
Timmy posted a video of the Pointer Sisters and he remined me, its been awhile since I played any of their music. So, I've been listening to the Pointer Sister's this morning. If it's a pet peeve oh well but you could spur the conversation by adding something too. (imo)

So?
you've "been" here since 2003...but just 299 messages
it seems that you don't care about this site that much...and your opinion (unjustified rant) will likely be ignored...

I agree with thebige! Anyone can go on Youtube and watch whatever they want. We don't really need this forum for that.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
If you want to have a discussion on those clips then comment on the songs yourself.
You're free to comment on what you might like / dislike about them or compare them to some other songs / eras by the same artist or other artists.
We post youtube links on this forum hoping that they would ignite discussion with the members on the board that share our tastes. Another reason why they are regularly posted is that they work as a reminder of different types of music instead of just leaving the entire board for threads that are about contemporary pop / R&B or even about completely irrelevant shit like Mariah Carey's twins or Janet Jackson arriving on some airport.

Isnt it the duty of the original poster who creates the thread to discuss the post initially? To get it going if you will. Otherwise it comes off as ipod shuffle lazy amongst other things. "Climb in my fur."

It's very important for me to know when Janet Jackson is getting on or off a plane. What's wrong with you?!

I was just thinking this this morning. Would be nice if people write something why they posted the song. Just posting a youtube clip is waaaaaay to easy.

Because I can. [Edited 11/13/11 15:10pm] You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I'll take as many new threads as possible; I don't need a long thought-out analysis about anything.

Here's my take (before this gets moved to site discussion)...
Yes, you can post a youtube clip without commentary but it helps if you actually share why you are posting the clip. I've found some awesome new music using this forum. A couple of times though it was simply by chance that I clicked play. A lot of times I am surfing this site while I am working and unable to actually listen and an explanation helps me filter what I should and shouldn't come back to.

If you really want to know the truth, what has happened to this forum is the insipid "venting" about what people don't like, instead of those people actually posting and starting discussions of their own, around topics that they do like and want to participate in.
No one is posting here for your amusement. If you want something specific, make it happen.
Otherwise, I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

Perhaps.
I just have nothing against the youtube video threads pushing the showbiz rumour bullshit threads off the front page.
I've gotten the impression that most people that post videos on this forum are choosing stuff that other people into Prince might enjoy too. For example, I've myself tried to pick out stuff that people that are into Prince's keyboard and horn arrangements might be into. For one reason or another I've assumed that a sufficient number of people on this forum will be able to hear the connection and that I don't necessarily have to point it out to them myself. Posting new videos by artists that many orgers are into won't need any sort of additional commentary though.

Yeah, like people going into threads just to say "Madonna has no talent", "I don't like autotune", "Why can't people listen to real music/singers", or trolling. The people doing this, never post about what is supposed to be good. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Wrong.
There is nothing wrong with posting new music and vids of new artists and obscure things but the forum over the past few years has become a place to post a youtube vid only of an old song on some back in the day ish with no commentary. A relic jukebox if you will. Not always though because at least someone like vainandy will disucss why he liked the jam back then and give some history to it in how it effected his life and such. Most heads here though just be posting a vid on some "oh I remember this song lemme post a vid and leave it at that" lmao.
Aka the forum used to be a place to come with it and not just to be a hey remember this one? place. But then again there has been a change..in members over the years as well, so there's also that "Climb in my fur."

Well i'm "guilty" of doing this, so it doesn't bother me when others post a youtube video of a song with very little commentary. I don't mind these posts at all because often people will post a song I haven't heard in ages or they'll post something by a new artist. For instance, I first got into Janelle Monae's music because of a song of hers someone posted here. I had heard of her before and seen her perform on tv, but never really was interested in her or her music.
Then someone on this site posted "BaBopByeYa" and I was blown away and bought her album soon after.
These posts are helpful for promoting or exposing newer artists to people as well as some older ones. Sometimes I like to post an old song I might enjoy to see if others like it as well and sometimes a discussion comes out of that.
These posts are really harmless if you ask me. I'll surely take these posts over nonsense threads about artists personal lives, which most of the time I don't give a shit about.
I'm mainly here for the music so as long as the post is music related, I don't really have a problem with it. "And When The Groove Is Dead And Gone, You Know That Love Survives, So We Can Rock Forever" RIP MJ
"Baby, that was much too fast"...Goodnight dear sweet Prince. I'll love you always ![]()

Me too and I agree. I've posted video's and said zip and I've posted video's and gave an opinion and/or history. Sometimes orger's respond and sometimes they didn't. It appears it really doesn't matter if I saying anything or not, people were motivated by the selection.
Not to pull him into some made up drama, Neil just posted a song by Ohio Players, "Who'd She Coo". An orger asked what were they saying or talking about, the Ohio Players. tA didn't give a synopsis of the posting. Damn listen or watch the video; if you have something to say than type something, it ain't brain surgery.

I might get blasted for this but I don't give a fuck but what's become of this forum is not because of YouTube posts, it's people WHINING LIKE BITCHES.
Go ahead and hate on me.

What exactly did you consider "wrong" in my post?
That doesn't make much sense as I only commented on how I prefer the Youtube threads over the showbusiness rumour threads and then gave a brief explanation on what has motivated me to choose the songs that I've posted here.
The "jukebox" phenomenon that you are referring to is pretty common on the internet these days. It's not any different from what gets posted on Facebook or blogs. The forms of internet communication have changed over the last couple of years and some people just don't seem to accept that. I used to write really long essay-like posts on this forum back in the day and to my delight some people actually had the patience to read them. I just think that it would be foolish for me to expect people to dedicate as much time to go through my personal thoughts still in 2011. It's perfectly enough for me these days if sn orger posts something that he / she thinks is good stuff and seeing some other orgers commenting on how they've dug that stuff too. I like making coffee in the morning and checking out maybe 2-3 links before leaving to work.

I've posted news articles on music and also posts about new music I have never heard before and don't get a response. Other times, I do. Sometimes people are just really into a new or old song that they have just heard and want to share it for those who may or may not have heard the music. If that inspires a conversation, more the better; if not, than that's all right, too. BTW how about contributing something more than complaints about how the org is now--since you've been a long time member, hmmm? Like novabrkr, many of the topics I post about are not necessarily fan favorites ("contemporary pop / R&B", Hip-Hop or Gossip [which should be moved to GD but that's a no win discussion]). That being the case, I won't invest the time and effort into a detailed explanation unless there's some interest. Then if time permits i'll fill in the blanks. Not to mention comments like "That's too much to read." won't inspire that type of posting either. As for the YouTube clips are lazy comment, at least the poster took the time to actually find the clip and post it. What about people that post questions that could easily be answered with a simple trip to their local search engine? Now that's lazy! Finally, maybe i've missed them, but I haven't noticed any thesis-like posts from anyone that's complaining about this issue. I consider them to be little treats. There have been artists and songs posted that I've completely forgotten about. There were some that I was not familiar with at all. I want to thank those who do post the videos. If there's nothing written, so be it. I can form my own opinion without having to be swayed by the member who posted it. If what's posted doesn't suit you, you can just skip it. I don't see the harm in the YouTube videos being posted with no commentary. I for one, enjoy them.

It's not like the Prince section has any deep topics either. "Why does Prince do Barbie arms?" or "Does he have a Twitter?"
