NEWS FLASH: Universal & Sony now owns EMI! With this deal finalize, there are now only 3 major record labels now: Universal, Sony, and Warner.
NEW YORK/PARIS (Reuters) - Vivendi's Universal Music Group and Sony won the auction for EMI's recorded music and music publishing operations on Friday, trumping bids by archrivals Warner Music Group and BMG Music Publishing at the 11th hour.
Universal said it would buy EMI's recorded-music unit for $1.9 billion, while two people familiar with the matter said a consortium led by Sony was expected to buy the publishing operation of the British music company for $2.2 billion.

EMI has been dying a slow death for a minute now anyway. Not surprised. Hell, all of the labels days are numbered. EMI's greatest value has been their catalog.

1.9 billion for EMI? The Beatles catalog is worth about as much... subtract a 200 /300 million dollars.
Well good luck with that, Sony admitted they didn't see the digital age / internet coming.

This is why I laugh at what people call indie music if u read licensing and shit on a cd almost everything is linked to a major. By the end of 2012 u will have 2 majors if your lucky possibly one all being Universal, sad it's come to this but saying its the digital age? It's a fucking cop out by tunnel vision artists and labels and marketing they all conspired to make crack like music for a public that can't deal with anything but sound bytes. Well good luck with that, Sony admitted they didn't see the digital age / internet coming. Don't forget Norah Jones and also Coldplay who basically have sold more together worldwide than entire labels. I'm waiting for Warner Bros to finally sell-out any time before the year 2020.
Universal & Sony will be the last 2 major labels still standing.

How much of those billions is going into artist pockets?

Yeah I was surprised that Jill Scott signed with WB. They've been struggling almost as bad as EMI for years.

It's been a long time since Van Halen or David Lee Roth has released a record (non-compilation) and the last Van Halen album (with Gary Cerrone) didn't do too well. So them leaving probably isn't that big of a deal. Warners still have Van Halen's & Madonna's big records in their catalog. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

catalog wise they arent, as for Van Halen, they are toast at this point, i wouldnt put them in a conversation of being a musical force anymore, touring maybe, but new work, no way. But that's old music (classics nonetheless!). What has Warner Bros done to really move on AND survive after Prince, Madonna, Motley Crue, & Van Halen left the label?

Prince knew exactly what he was talking about back then. He made the best decision of any artist to get out of that chain he was attached to. He was a slave...

EMI
So it all comes down to a pissing match. If you think this sale has anything to do with music, you probably believe Milli Vanilli sang on their record.
