I've also ranked the artists in each decade.
1. 70s David Bowie, Stevie Wonder, Kraftwerk, Roxy Music/Brian Eno, The Temptations 2. 90s The Boo Radleys, Suede, U2, David Bowie, Blur 3. 80s Prince, Prefab Sprout, Pet Shop Boys, The Smiths, Terence Trent D'Arby 4. 60s The Kinks, The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Jacques Brel, The Rolling Stones 5. 00s Benjamin Biolay, Prefab Sprout, Sufjan Stevens, Pet Shop Boys, Prince
I've been unfair with artists I love, but who have their best albums in different decades. For example, I haven't included Michael Jackson because my favourite records are Off The Wall, Bad and Dangerous (three decades). Similar with Sting (Nothing Like The Sun, The Soul Cages and Ten Summoner's Tales) Madonna (Like A Prayer and Erotica).

This is unfair, and completely arbitrary, but I'm limiting no. of artists to 3.
1. 80's: The Police, Prince, Public Enemy 2. 70's: Stevie, Sly, Steely Dan (among so many others) 3. 60's: James, Jimi and 'Trane 4. 50's: Miles, Blakey, Horace Silver 3. 90's: Digable Planets, Jamiroquai, De La Soul Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

This is an interesting question. My first reaction was the 1960s because pop music was booming back then, but a lot of great music has been made afterwards. So I'll go for: 1970s: saw the rise of P-Funk, Zappa and some great work from The Stones, Dylan, Marvin, Stevie, Sly and James Brown. which leads me to the 1960s. Just add Motown, Stax,The Doors, The Beatles and Hendrix. 1950s. Reelin an rockin with Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Bo Diddley, Buddy Holly, Muddy Waters Pre 1950: Yeah, going back in time! Blues and jazz. Billie Holiday, Robert Johnson. Contrary to what you might expect from a Prince fan, I hate most 1980s music. That's why I'm a Prince fan! He almost singlehandedly saved the 80s from being a musical disaster area. Plus Terence Trent d'Arby, my very first LP. And Kate Bush. Think it can't get any worse? Hiphop came along. But to end this on a positive note, my favorite young singer is Joss Stone. There still is soulful music around. Check Eli Paperboy Reed & the True Loves! And a special mention to Miles Davis who made great innovative music throughout the decades. | |

1. 90's R&B, Pop, some hip-hop, some rap. Sorry guys but this was my decade and what I grew up with so of course it peaks! Janet, R. Kelly, 2pac, TLC, Madge, Sinead, Heavy D (R.I.P), Mariah, MJ,
2. 80's Pop, rock, dance, funk. Prince, MJ, Madge, Whitney, Janet, Olivia, Rick James, H&O, Bon Jovi ect. ect. ect. So much good music in the 80's!
3. 70's Soul, R&B, funk and some rock. Marvin, George Clinton & Parliament-Funkadelic, Led Zepplin, Jackson 5, Stevie Wonder, Santana, Earth Wind & Fire, Sly And The Family Stone ect. ect.
4. 2000's some R&b, some pop. Lady Gaga, Kanye West, MJ, Janet, Madge, Santana (Best stuff of this era was by people who didn't began their careers in this era)
5. 60's Rock, soul, R&B Jimi Hendix, Aretha, Beatles, Marvin, Santana

I forgot some names in my previous post.
In the 70's, Genesis/Peter Gabriel. In the 80's, Kate Bush. In the 90's, Tricky and Bjork.
Also, I'd love to include Françoise Hardy, but she made her best work at the end of the 60's and the beginning of the 70's, and considering her works in only one decade, she doesn't rank as high as the other artists I have included. | |
