Album Review Dec 6, 2011
“Why did God take the homie? I can’t stand it,” raps Nas on “Like Smoke,” a fine soul-noir track from Amy Winehouse’s new posthumous compilation Lioness: Hidden Treasures. “I’m a firm believer that we all meet up in eternity,” he raps in his ode to a friendship cut short.
Lioness only begins to hint at the kind of affection Winehouse inspired — she duets with rap icons and Tony Bennett here. That’s because for all Winehouse’s deep, fatal flaws, her immense talent was fueled by a compelling openness and vulnerability.
“Between the Cheats” is pristine girl-group weeper, but Winehouse takes the occasion for a rangy, limber vocal workout. A regal cover of “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?” comes off less as morning-after trepidation than a self-aware plea for forgiveness. And Winehouse absolutely steals “Body & Soul” out from under Bennett, no mean feat when you’re up against one of the genre’s celestial crooners.
The 12-song compilation is slight on new insights — it’s hard to tell what an umpteenth version of “Girl From Ipanema” adds to her legacy. But as vault-emptying collections go, Lioness helps rebut the tabloid qualities of her life and death, and return some of the focus back to what won her such allegiance — her voice.

Wow, really?? Definitely shell out the extra bucks for the deluxe editions. But make sure you buy the import of Frank Deluxe or you'll be missing the song Help Yourself which was excluded from the American release. "Keep in mind that I'm an artist...and I'm sensitive about my shit."--E. Badu

Excellent cd. I listened to it twice last night and I'm loving it. Sounds retro with soul, jazz and pop. She has such style and an amazing delivery.

Amy Winehouse's Lioness: Hidden Treasures Straight To #1 December 11, 2011
Amy Winehouse’s Lioness: Hidden Treasures has gone straight in at number one to top the album chart.
Speaking about the number one success, Amy’s mother Janis said:"It’s such amazing news that Amy’s album has gone to number one, and just goes to show what she still means to people."
She added: It’s especially good for the foundation and knowing that every sale will go to help a deserving cause makes the news all the more special. I’m so proud of my daughter and so happy that she is still touching people. She's forever in my heart.
The album was compiled by long-time collaborators Salaam Remi and Mark Ronson in close association with Amy’s family, management and record label Island Records.
The Official Charts Company, who compile the charts, report Lioness: Hidden Treasures sold 194,000 copies since Monday, the fourth-highest first-week sales figure this year behind Lady Gaga's Born This Way (215,000), Coldplay's Mylo Xyloto (208,343) and Adele's 21 (208,090).
Official Charts Company managing director Martin Talbot said: "For Amy's posthumous album to soar to the top of the Official Albums Chart in what is such a competitive time of year is an impressive achievement and a fitting tribute. It shows just what she meant to British music fans. "
Gennaro Castaldo of retailers HMV added: "We fully expected 'Lioness: Hidden Treasures' to go straight in at N0 1, but to do so achieving such a level of sales is truly remarkable." In the single chart, Olly Murs also went straight in at number one, with 'Dance With Me Tonight', adding the top-selling track to the number one album he earned last week.

I wasn't going to buy this, even though I like Amy Winehouse, but it was $9.99, so I decided to pick it up. Very nice. She's not really pushing any boundaries here and it sounds basically like a continuation of Back to Black. But, it's pretty great. Great songs, great singing. And, even though it's just a collection of unreleased material, it holds together pretty well as an album. There's a couple of songs which are alternate versions of Back to Black songs, and I like the B2B versions better, but their still good. If you're a Winehouse fan, get this. I'd say it's worth it.
