The Downfall Of YouTube: What Are The Alternatives?!?

First, read THIS:

http://news.yahoo.com/you...222714.htm

YouTube launches broad entertainment venture

NEW YORK (AP) — YouTube is making a bold step into original programming in an entertainment venture with some 100 content creators, from Madonna to The Wall Street Journal.

The Google Inc.-owned video site said Friday that it's launching more than 100 new video channels. The partners include an array of Hollywood production companies, celebrities and new media groups that will produce mainly niche-oriented videos.

YouTube is shelling out $100 million to producers, according to people familiar with the matter, who spoke on condition of anonymity. The money is an advance on advertising money the videos will bring in, and Google will recoup its portion first before splitting the proceeds. Advances are as high as $5 million per channel, said another person familiar with the arrangement, also speaking on condition of anonymity.

Neither person was authorized to comment publicly on the matter.

Google declined to offer financial details of the deals, but said the majority of revenue will go to partners.

Participants include Madonna, former NBA star Shaquille O'Neal, comedian Amy Poehler, actor Ashton Kutcher, "Office" star Rainn Wilson, spiritual doctor Deepak Chopra and "Modern Family" actress Sofia Vergara. Most are creating channels through their production companies. Madonna is a partner with the dance channel DanceOn, while O'Neal plans the Comedy Shaq Network.

Lionsgate is presenting a fitness channel, and other channels will be launched by news satire the Onion, professional wrestling's WWE, online magazine Slate and news service Thomson Reuters.

The channels will roll out beginning this month, though most will premiere next year. YouTube says the channels will add 25 hours of new original content daily, with dozens of Web series debuting at scheduled times.

Ultimately, YouTube is aiming to create a new digital video platform that will rival television programming.

In a blog posting Friday night, YouTube said the channels are being developed "specifically for the digital age." The video site compared the expanded video offerings to the advent of cable television.

YouTube has tried to build a more advertiser-friendly product of professional-quality video, as opposed to simply user-created videos. Advertisers generally prefer to have their ads matched with known quantities. YouTube has also previously tried to urge viewers to stay longer with TV-like services like the YouTube Leanback, which continuously plays a personalized selection of videos. Google is also looking to add professionally produced content to its huge roster of user-generated videos, to give users of its Google TV platform something to watch.

Major Hollywood networks such as News Corp.'s Fox and The Walt Disney Co.'s ABC have blocked their content from being shown on Google TV because the sides have been unable to come to a licensing deal that the networks believes pays them fairly. Networks also don't want to jeopardize their lucrative relationship with pay TV distributors like Comcast Corp. and DirecTV.

Google is a platform that has been adopted by set-top box maker Logitech, which makes a device called a Logitech Revue that sells for $100.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THIS^ is good and bad.

The good news is Google/YouTube can and will definitely be an ultimate solution to most of us that miss to good ole golden years when MTV, VH-1, & BET actually did show music videos most of the time instead of too many reality TV shows.

The bad news is all amentur video makers will have a far more difficult time uploading videos on YouTube when they have to compete against giant media corporations in terms of promoting AND providing quality entertainment. In other words, there will be a time when YouTube is not longer "free" like it still is at the moment.

With that said fellow orgers, I ask you:

What are the possible alternatives video sites to YouTube that I need to know about?

I wouldn't go THAT far to say "downfall" JUST YET. People will still do those random videos and shit but it'll have to compete. It's kinda like with XTube, there's so many amateur channels that you have to pay to see and it's already like that with YouTube (you gotta pay to see some movies that the film companies have uploaded on there).

That said, the only alternative I see is DailyMotion.

Well...the one exception I would make would be for East Enders. I still don't understand why the BBC wouldn't make a deal with Youtube to let people pay to watch it after all the episodes were pulled off Youtube! mad

I can understand why you're so concerned but you should've known YouTube was doing this anyway. I knew they were thinking of doing it a couple years ago and just recently, they added in a movies section to their site. Of course you can't watch that for free. So I don't get why it's such a "shock". shrug Like I said, we'll see how many folks actually pay for those channels.

You saw how Netflix users treated the premium channels? Don't think YouTube will succeed in this at all unless people had money like that. lol

Yeah, they did. I remember when you could watch all kinds of movies and shows on it--like the aforementioned East Enders! mad And I wanted to see what happened with the gay love story when the Indian guy was engaged to a really hot chick but had a sizzling affair going on with his lover on the side. I refuse to look at two minute clip. hmph!

And f** Netflix. Redbox was already killing them for the last 6 months. Even some local public libraries are improving their DVD & Blu-Ray selections. Netflix needs to be ashamed of themselves for trying to financially screw over their own customers.

The bitch of it all is that I read an article on the internet stating that they were going to reverse their policies and NOT charge customers separate fees for getting DVDs and streaming. But when I looked at my latest bill, they charged me nearly $18.00. I was steamed. Customer service explained to me that they decided not to split into two separate companies but they still decided to raise fees even though so many customers bailed. They reversed the extra charges but I had to settle for streaming only at $8.00 per month. I will probably eventually choose to end that, too. lol

That's how they get you in the first place. They all like "we promise not to charge you separate fees" then turn around and do exactly what they promise NOT to do. Thing with YouTube is "will people actually pay to see Shaq's channel or Madonna's?" That should be the question. Not "will this make user-created videos unpopular?" Believe me, the "user-created videos" will NEVER, I repeat, NEVER lose their popularity no matter what Google tries to do. lol tv

Damn straight! There will ALWAYS be pirates on the internet flaunting the status quo...just like they used to do in the heyday of radio. It's still the wild frontier! lol

Same thing with the premium channels posted above. LOL @ paying to view videos from The Onion's channel. It got its own channel on cable I think. ohgoon Shaq? [raspberries]

All these other channels don't look like anything I wanna watch anyways. neutral Downfall my ass. YouTube's gonna always have a free section.

WWE Fan Nation channel has been on YouTube for a while now. The only problem is that they will NOT show an entire episode of Raw at all. But they will give you Smackdown, NXT, & Superstars (commercial free).

But stay on the topic of music, Prince really f***ed up business-wise. THIS man should have a YouTube Channel of all of his career music videos. Even Warner Bros, EMI, & Universial would back him up if he takes the idea seriously for a change.

Yeah lots of other musicians have gotten paid from how many views their videos gotten (if it's not uploaded by someone else other than their camp or label) but it seems that the man just didn't wanna do it. He could've put his concerts up too if he want if he had the footage.

I'm still waiting for Todd Rundgren to do the same for YouTube though! lol

lol That's why I stay watching videos I know they won't bother unless otherwise like YouTube Poops. razz That's really all I watch as far as "shows" and "movies" on YouTube. smile Otherwise, I just view the audio videos lol

Plus there are other free sources now to watch movies on...for those in the know. wink lol

Bittorrent is THE worst kept secret ever. But at least they will never shutdown like eMule, Kazza-Lite, and other P2P before them.

But regardless of other free sources, you really have to be careful when it comes to videos. Instead of viewers getting sue, internet service providers (ISPs) would get sue for allowing video viewers to hog up the cable bandwith lines whenever videos are being "illegally" downloaded.

The laws involving digital entertainment varies among each country worldwide. I know here in the USA, Comcast & Cox Communications are the main two ISPs that have been called out by the RIAA & MPAA for allowing their internet customers too much freedom sort to speak.

^ Right. And be very extra careful especially if you upload a full episode of "The Misfits" or "Skins".

YouTube will sellout like Napster.

Just wait. disbelief

Sell out? It already did that Tony. bored2 lol

Getting brought out by Google does not count. no no no! Google is small compare to Microsoft and even Apple.

Now getting shafted by the RIAA (like what happen to Napster), MPAA, Viacom, Clear Channel Communications, News Corp (like what happen to MySpace), or other media corporations, that would be selling out.
