Is it anal to alphabetise your CD collection?

People tell me I'm anal because I alphabetise my CD collection.

However, I have about 1000 CD's and if they weren't in order I would take ages finding a CD.

Am I being anal or not?

As an aside, I've been to peoples homes and discovered they don't even keep their CD's in the correct case. My idea of HELL. evillol

cds should never be kept in alphabetical order. that's the law

if a bird ever saw your cds and noticed they were alphabetical they would never shag you

you should file in an order you can follow, but a bird wouldn't understand

once i filed my cds in alphabetical order but most of they were under T for The. then someone told me to refile and ignore the "the". then i got to "the The" and got confused so i ended up throwing them out. and infected was one of my favourite albums, so it goes to show that alphabetical is wrong

you only have a thousand discs which is nothing. wait till you get a big collection and trying to find a disc is like looking for something specific in a junk sale. finding cds becomes a surprise like the old fashioned alternative to random play on ipods

I sort them in order of artist, chronology and relation.

For example, Michael Jackson (starting with Motown albums, finishing with Michael the posthumous album) goes next to Janet Jackson goes next to The Jacksons goes next to 3T goes next to Jermaine. 2Pac goes next to Snoop goes next to Dr. Dre goes next other Death Row Records artists like The Dogg Pound. Then 50 Cent and Eminem's CD's go next to that because of the Dre connection. Roger's solo albums go next to Zapp's albums.

Of course, Prince has his own shelf arranged chronologically.

Alphabetisation wouldn't work for me because I like to keep artists albums in groups.

No, you're not being anal. You're anal when the CD label has to be upright before closing the case.

I have a friend who calls me anal for alphabetising when he does chronological, yet he insists the label is upright.

What's with that?

If that works for you, great.

Personally, I don't pay any attention to record labels and as far as artists being connected to other artists there are so many ways to connect them I'd forget which ways I'd chosen.

Again, If it works for you, great!

Really whatever works for you is what you should do. I also chronologically arrange my CDs according to the artists. It's easier for me.

I suppose I worship in the same church as MrBartolozzi; I don't shag birds, but I do alphabetise.

Not only that, I keep them in chronological order too. Own names are filed under (for instance) Bush, Kate, but band names are filed as such. Except if it starts with 'The'. Cuz then it will be Beatles, The, of course.

FYI, Unique, I shag a lot. batting eyes

I've gotten messy for the past few years, but I have been anal for many years before that. I would do alphabetical for awhile, then I would go by genre though realizing that was silly since some artists did more than one, then I went by year of release.

It's not anal in the slightest. Imagine trying to buy an album if they were grouped in anything but alphabetical order (yes I know they also group them first by genre).

I like to put the disc back in the correct way up. I don't read at an angle or upside down so why should the text be that way when I open the case. I also place my films into the same order and my games, athough they are first grouped by console.

My kitchen items are also placed in the cupboards in a manner that pleases me. Not quite so bad with grocery items but I do like to keep them in order, both of type and uses (curry spices in one container, herbs in another and everything else kind of bundled together, that sort of thing. Mustards together, chutneys, sauces, dried pulses/pasta, flour/yeast, and so on.

I'm a lazy perfectionist. I notice little things and they annoy me incredibly. If I set the table everything has to be pretty much spot on. I can even organise clutter.

Funnily enough I don't care about nature. I can walk in the woods and there are leaves, moss, broken branches, plants both growing and dying and for some reason it all seems perfectly placed. I think it only applies to man-made artifacts. They just don't seem natural within the world when placed haphazardly. They should be tidy or out of sight.

Oh, my underwear drawer is organised and my shirts are hung and grouped by colour/sleeve length. And why people hang a pitcture and then don't keep it level really bugs me.

i can imagine that. that's how most people buy music these days. no alphabeticalness needed to buy a cd on itunes or amazon. you just type in what you want and press a couple of buttons

going back to the old daze when i worked in a record store, we did file alphabetically (and numbers were converted to words for consistency, so UTWO for example - as sometimes on the record it might be listed in numerics, othertimes in text, like tupac/2pac as a shite example). but whilst that worked for record shops it doesn't work for your home

can you imagine arranging anything else in your life in the same way as a store would arrange it?

so all your chairs grouped together. all the tables together, all the tvs together, instead of in a useful purpose. no bird would shag you if you had some fucked up house like that either

birds can tell when guys alphabeticalise shit, as when they look at the cds they can see the letters matching. but stick shit in a different order, even if it's a more geeky order, and they can't tell. it confuses them, and you are fine and you can get laid

fuck sake, these are just basic rules of normality

I do it alphabetically and chronologically. But, as your record collection grows, it's increasingly difficult: you buy three records of The Beach Boys and two of The Beatles, for example, and you have to move all your other records from BE to Z to leave space on the shelves for the new ones. I haven't got the patience to spend hours and hours moving my CDs and vinyl records anymore, but I don't want to renounce to order. Therefore, at a certain point I start once again with the A-records. For example: 700 records alphabetically and chronologically and then start again. This works for me at the moment. If I hadn't do this change, maybe I would be buying only ZZ Top records. biggrin

You're right. I shagged plenty of birds in the vinyl era. Then CD's were introduced and I was gay all of a sudden. I am sure that once I switch to MP3, I am straight again.
