Morris Day and Evelyn 'Champagne' King? Is there any information on this floating around anywhere?
Was it to be a duet like 'Mechanical Romance' with Vanity or a whole album with the duo? Do we know around what yer this was, would it have included Kashif that's hy Prince "poo poo'd" on this marriage? PRINCE: Always and Forever
MICHAEL JACKSON: Always and Forever

I've never heard about this before. That might have been a very interesting combination. "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

It's a shame that Prince didn't want these guys to take advantage of opportunities that came their way. |

It is a shame as you say and usually it stems from a lack of self esteem in your life and judging from the Orriginal 7ven documentary it doesn't surprise me at all. Don't forget that at times the Time was upstaging his majesty on the 1999 tour and I'm a witness to that. |

Prince may have been wrong for telling Morris not to do it but Morris stayed because it was good for him until it wasn't anymore. Jam & Lewis saw their shot and took it, paid the consequences of their actions and never looked back. It worked for them. The music business is still a business. You either run your own affairs or have someone doing it for you. Prince did that for a lot of people back then. If Prince didn't make the distatseful choices that he did we'd have Alexander O'Neal up front and Morris Day would just be some drummer! When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming! |

And during the Controversy tour he actually kicked The Time off the bill in major cities such as New York and LA because they had been getting so much attention. Not for long. Alex O' Neal would have snorted it away and Morris would have probably
eventually ended up the front man anyway. Don't laugh at my funk

To keep it real, Alex is a better vocalist than Morris, so him fronting the Time wouldn't have been that bad. His solo material is Time-esque anyway, considering J&T produced a lot of it. |

I never understood why Prince wanted to 'control' people. It's one thing for him to write and produce their music, but to try to stop them from doing the same with other artists? That's a crazy situation and it's one reason why his 'empire' ultimately collapsed. You can't control people and stop them from making money and pursuing their dreams.
I've said this many times before: Prince should have realized how much talent he had around him and ultilized these people to create his own Motown of the 80s.Instead of firing Jam and Lewis,he should have offered them a writing and producing deal! Same with Andre Cymone.By the late 80s,his Paisley Park Records label was releasing all these hit-less albums that went nowhere. |

That's true but ask yourself where would Morris be if the switch hadn't been made. Would we even care about him and his current status. Prince put people in the right places to further their careers. Sheila E would've never sang without his pushing for it. Morris would've been the same way. When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming! |

My guess is that this collaboration was planned in mid-1983,when Evelyn was working on her 'Face To Face' album.A few tracks were produced by Andre Cymone.Evelyn was a huge fan of the Minneapolis sound. She probably came up with the idea to do a duet with Morris Day. |

Hafta agree, I'm loving this CD ... haven't stopped playing it since I bought it Saturday.
I would put Role Play up against anything The Time has done in the past - including Jungle Love. It's THAT good. "Never let nasty stalkers disrespect you. They start shit, you finish it. Go down to their level, that's the only way they'll understand. You have to handle things yourself." |

I never heard that rumor and can't even imagine a duet between the two. Their voices don't really compliment one another. Ev's has so much base in her voice.
I do remember reading about her that she once had an intense crush on Prince and for a period during her career, she referred to herself as "Princess". I'M NOT SAYING YOU'RE UGLY. YOU JUST HAVE BAD LUCK WHEN IT COMES TO MIRRORS AND SUNLIGHT!
RIP Dick Clark, Whitney Houston, Don Cornelius, Heavy D, and Donna Summer. |

Morris has toured endlessly under Morris Day & The Time and made money off of it. The Original 7ven had no interest in reforming for about 18 years or so(until the Grammy show). The name was virtually useless to anybody for all of that time and it wasn't an issue. When faced with a situation that he didn't like Prince changed his name to get around it. That manuever basically showed any protege who's named he claimed to own how to get around him with no effort or drama.
Also I haven't watched the entire documentary but when Jam & Lewis left and asked who's coming with us why didn't everyone get up if it was so unbearable? According to them they were on the rise and it would've been the perfect time to strike out on their own from under Prince. Heck, Jerome stuck around to be in 2 more bands and another movie and a tour! That's something that's been bothering me about the Time saga. When Jam & Lewis were sacked, why didn't the other members join them if they felt that Prince was doing them dirty? Why stay around if they weren't scared to topple him onstage? Me thinks they needed Prince then more than probably Jam & Lewis did so Jam & Lewis went on to be top producers. It wasn't until the late 1980s that portions of the group returned to work together (Jam & Lewis producing "Fishnet" for Morris). |

That's a telling move right there. Them dudes knew which side the bread was buttered. Jam & Lewis had done one hot track at that point. That wasn't going to feed 7 dudes and their families. Everyone made an adult decision for their own best interests. Prince hardly locked them in the basement and forced them to play shows. To believe the bragging they do on wax these dudes were getting laid beyond anything they ever knew and doing major venue shows. Sounds like hell to me! Even jam said the material Prince was giving them was top notch!
