Talented Artists With Underwhelming Material Did you ever come across people you think are really gifted but the work they produce doesn't do them any justice?
I'll give you an example:

I agree with u about Jennifer. They keep trying to take the gospel and broadway out of her and they can't. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

I totally agree on Jhud, but there is also this one: [Edited 10/25/11 20:55pm] 2012: The Queen Returns

Her post-Labelle career has been dreadful musical-wise with few exceptions.

Lizz Wright
The woman should be huge but she just can't seem to put an album together that matches her talent.
And dare I add:
Nikka Costa
Don't get me wrong, she's got some great albums but she has yet to truly capture what she does live and put it on record.

Come to think of it she isn't getting the most out of her talent either.
No Idol has really satisfied me 100% other than Carrie Underwood.

I'd go with obscurity Valensia. First 3 albums were great, but he needs a producer and songwriters to work with. Of course, the fact that only Japan would release his albums after his first 2 sort of meant he was an outcast anyway, though at least his side project Metal Majesty got a proper european release....

The few songs she has released turned me off from purchasing anything from her.

I read somewhere that her first album was supposed to be meant for Tamara Gray, but Tamara didn't want to go in the typical r&b direction. I love a few cuts from her 1st cd, but her other material is so hit and miss to me. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

Interesting... I can kinda see why Tamara didn't dig it.

Tevin Campbell after "I'm ready". Tried to make him more rnb and edgy. Funny how the poppiest song from the album "back to the world", was the biggest hit.
Can barely remember his last album. Too mellow if I can remember, but the damage was done by then.....
Bobby Brown after "Bobby". Yes folks, "Forever". A few of the songs are quite good actually, but considering it was meant to have some big producers on it, what the hell happened? Where did the reported tracks go? He never has recovered after that one.

Carrie has the best post-Idol showing. All three of her releases have been solid.
Kelly is second. For me the My December era was a total miss and All I Ever Wanted was about 50-50. Some great material, some lackluster.

I blame more than musical direction (or non-direction) to what has happened to Bobby's career. It's almost tragic. He had potential to do more.
As for Tevin, yeah I don't get the quick move from teenybopper to edgier artist, it didn't really take off. If he wanted to be edgy, he could've recorded funkier material then.

Yessssssss. He should be HUGE.

He waited too long between "I'm ready" and "back to the world".
Sure, US pop at the time of "back to the world" was more rnb and less poppy like his earlier stuff, but people wanted those big ass ballads from Tevin, and "back to the world", to my knowledge, had none!
Where was Babyface or someone like Jam and Lewis or David Foster or Walter Affanafsief (spelling?)? Or even Narada? Bad marketing change there. And it cost Tevin and his label. A few rnb cuts are fine, but the producers were mainly wrong for that album. As I said, the biggest hit off that album was one of the few poppiest ones and from one of the more obscure producers/songwriters (Jamey Jaz who went on to work with Rahsaan). Major mistake.

All these are very good choices i have to say.
I would also put people like.....
Dr. Dre, his new songs are eh, and the chronic 2001 was mixed. For being a great producer & producing ldozens of huge artists. He can't seem to make good songs for himself past The Chronic.
Whitney Houston...... Very underwheling material. Her first album is best. Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

granted I am not familiar with everything he's done, but for a talented singer, pianist, and composer, I can't think of a single particularly good song of his.

Don't know about Kravitz yet but Whitney and Mariah definitely have not impressed me albums-wise.

I think Lenny has better albums then those 2 but i do like some of Mariahs albums, and i like Whitneys first 2 and some of the bodyguard Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

I definitly agree with J- Hud, Fantansia and Tevin...
I do like some of tasia's songs and of course Tevins. I wish they just stop trying to market Jennifer as a pop act... she is to soulful for that..

Well, I do like some of Lenny's songs true, but he always has way too much filler on his albums. My Legacy

Ha, well judging from some songs I can see why you would say that.

Mariah has too many solid albums for me to put her in the list. It's like the kid in school who flunks the final exam but it doesn't matter since they've been an A student forever.

I agree.Jennifer is extremely talented but so far, nobody has given her an outstanding song that would make people go "wow!".She needs stronger material.Every single that I have heard from her has been lackluster, especially that R.Kelly-written crap "Where You At".
