Katy Perry’s ‘Teenage Dream’ Finally Certified Double Platinum

Katy Perry achieved massive success on the Billboard Hot 100 during the last year but she has often been criticised regarding her relatively slow album sales. However, the Pop superstar has truly gotten the last laugh as her ‘Teenage Dream’ LP has finally been certified double platinum in the US.

Released on August 24th 2010, ‘Teenage Dream’ has thus far amassed retail sales exceeding 1.83 million copies in the US and has thus far remained on the Billboard 200 for 60 weeks since it debuted at #1 on the tally with 192K units sold. Furthermore, the LP spawned a record-breaking 5 #1 singles on the Hot 100 and earned Katy the title of being the only female artist to achieve that feat as she matched Michael Jackson’s similar historic accomplishment with his ‘Bad’ album in 1988.

Despite encountering severe criticism from songwriter Linda Perry, who blamed Katy for the downfall of the music industry, ‘Teenage Dream’ was nominated at the 2011 Grammy Awards ceremony for Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album. Katy has also been nominated for 3 American Music Awards, including Artist of the Year, and she is scheduled to perform at the event which will air live on November 20th at 8pm ET via ABC.

Just took 20 years.

I'm sorry, but who ever heard of an album that spawned 5 #1 singles taking this long to go only 2x platinum? I can't even wrap my head around the reasoning behind that. That's bad. An album with that many hits should be over 6x platinum (digital age be damned.)

For better or worse, iTunes undercut the record labels' bread and butter album -based sales model, allowing consumers to be selective about individual tracks from whole albums. It can be argued that Perry's album might have otherwise moved 5-6M copies by now.

My thoughts exactly. I don't see how these record labels make money anymore.

Pffft. Bad had five #1s and at one point was the second best selling album ever. Her sales are laughable.

It was a different time but yea for all the hogging on radio this year/last year her sales are honestly pathetic.

To put it blunty, Katy is a CD/mp3/ringtone singles artist. She is NOT an album-centric artist.

Exactly though the two used to go hand in hand, now they are almost always opposites. Your either an album artist or a download artist meaning a 99cent artist as I call them

^ Girl's album hasn't even been CERTIFIED yet! confused I'm actually stunned by that. Been out since May and hasn't got a plaque yet. Did Universal lose a lot of money in pushing what they did? I don't get it. confused It's certified outside the U.S.

It has sold 7 mil world wide, but thus far it's sold 1.9 in the US. I assume they don't want to certify until it reaches 2mil.

Oh hey I just noticed it sold just as much as Katy Perry's while being out half as long. Funny how that works.

shrug Gaga seems to love bloated numbers, perhaps they'll wait for the holiday packaging to boost sales for an official certification.

I doubt Gaga has that much power though. "No don't certify it here until we get to November." falloff

I don't feel that it is true. If the album was something people wanted to own, they would have bought it regardless of iTunes or the internet.

MP3's and illegal downloading existed during the era when albums were going 7, 8, 9, 10x platinum. Remember Napster, and how it was around during the height of that silly boyband/teen pop era of the late 90s and early 00s, when they were scoring diamond certified albums?

I hate how people are using the digital age as an excuse for paltry sales.

Something is very wrong when your album scored a handful of top 10/top 5/number 1 singles, and yet the best you can do is move 1.8 million in the US and 4-6 million WW.

Katy Perry's album is a flop. Lady Gaga's album is a flop. Rihanna's album is a flop. Hell, even Adele's album has fallen short of what Norah Jones's did.

Yes but when albums were still selling that big itunes and illegal downloading weren't nearly as wide sread. It existed but not everyone knew how to do it. You can't seriously think if Norah Jones came out tomorrow she would sell as many copies as she did 7 years ago.
