It's sad how her career was relegated to that one song. Then again that song was so campy and huge in its day, she was already doomed career wise.

I think she had like two other hits or something. I know one of them being a cover of "I'm On Your Side" (Angela Bofill) because they used to play her version all the time on adult urban radio when I was around 7 or 8.

I think she has a great voice, but she over does it..a lot. Her performance will be more screaming than anything. And you can't forget those facial expressions!

I don't know if it had anything to do with her weight, but, after Geffen Records signed her in the 80's, they acted like they didn't know what to do with her. Her albums were, for the most part, forgettable. She sounded great but they just couldn't seem to get her with the right producers and get some great material. And the singles that were released not pushed outside of the black radio and even on those stations, she received a lukewarm response. It looked as though Geffen was going to throw support behind her after the initial single "I Am Love" from her first album did well but after that, they just kind of dropped the ball with her.

Jennifer should have released a gospel or club album. She said she was dealing with depression. I wish her the best.

re being bitter, i agree. i think i either read or saw an interview with her around the time DReamgirls came out and she was just, beyond bitter and that got me thinking-she is a MAJOR talent and it doesn't make sense how she never took off or got any chances beyond dreamgirls. Was she blackballed or something like that?

She wasn't blackballed. The reason her career never took off after Dreamgirls is she was with a label who didn't care about her and she had lousy management. The exact same thing that happened with a lot of black female vocalists during the 80s.

Whenever Jennifer is asked about her career she always gives honest answers. Some might think her answers prove she's a bitter Entertainer. I simply like that fact that she's comfortably enough & brave enough to tell "her truth" about how she sees herself.

I don't look at it as a sign of weakness or bitterness on her part for doing that. Lying about career ups & downs and the way you've been treated is just gonna form a harder shell. You gotta release all of that and talk about it out loud. You might hurt some feelings in the process but at least you will become a "better you".

It was interesting when Wendy asked her about Jennifer Hudson playing her part in the movie. Holliday said (I'm paraphrasing) something like she was disappointed Hudson/the studio didn't call her to go back to the original source and ask about the role etc...Apparently in hollywood it's customary for new person playing a role to have a conversation with the original person who played that role Also she was disappointed that when Oprah had the movie cast on her show, she didn't invite Holliday, since Oprah likes to talk about history etc...

Holliday also indirectly implied Fantasia is not professional She said something like "You have to do what they're expecting and paying you to do." Obviously this comment was about Fantasia skipping out on some of her broadway appearances in the past. Holliday also hinted she disapproved of Fantasia being cast in the Mahalia Jackson biopic.

I love how Jennifer Holliday is so candid It's refreshing.

Looking at Entertainer's "she seems bitter" post, I'm reminded of her comments when asked why she was never asked to appear in "Dreamgirls" nor did JHud seem to acknowledge her (she instead acknowledged Florence Ballard, the assumed inspiration behind the Effie White character)...

Im sorry Jennifer Holiday didnt have flourishing singing career I mean she does have a set of powerhouse pipes but Hollywood doesnt owe her anything. I dont think she was purposely mean-spirited to throw shade at J-Hud though I believe Wendy was trying to start some shit as usual. I read about it a while ago and was actually amused. I had a feeling it was Jennifer after hearing it but I wasn't sure initially. I wonder if this was another one of those songs that either Chaka or Aretha was supposed to guest on but had to change schedule.
