PURPLE MUSIC: Most Prince/Minneapolis Funk influenced album of the year

I am not going to talk the new albums of The Original 7ven or Fdeluxe here. In the end they are the Minneapolis Funk!

No, the year 2011 has brought some hot new music, mostly from so called 'Independent Artists' which are heavily influenced by the Minneapolis music scene but have never worked with Prince himself. Please check them out, they are definitely worth a listen ....

My very favorite is:

MAYA VIK - Album: CHâTEAU FAUX-COUPE

kind of a SHEILA E from Europe ....

other favorites:

GOLDIE WATSON - ELECTRIC HEAVEN

PATRICK STUMP - SOUL PUNK

JOHNNY SHOWCASE - LOVE IS THE MESSAGE

DEONIS - THE BREAKING POINT

NINA ATTAL - YELLOW 6/17

TGFA - WHITE KEY

JOY DELIVERED - JOY DELIVERED

WES STYLES - THE BETAMAX COLLECTION

NAZZ - GLORIA EUPHORIA

Please name your discoveries here, I am sure I missed some ... Thank You!

Maya Vik is widely known as a fashion icon in Norway, and as the bassist of this band

as well as a few other bands... she has actually reached 31 years, and this is going to be a major national release. Vinyl and mp3 is released in Norway today. Probably going to be international if it's doing ok on the sales.

Btw, I like this song quite a bit. It's not on the level of Prince, not even close. But it's fun to hear something close to prince produced jill jones in new and modern wrapping. Sounds fresh in todays music scene wich on the mainstream is very sad.

Thank's a lot for the feedback regarding MAYA VIK. I had absolutely no clue where she's from, I guessed Norway because she's signed to Oslo Records, but I was not sure. Why is it that she named her album CHÂTEAU FAUX-COUPE, any French connections???

Would love to learn more about the Scandinavian Funk/Soul scene as we do not receive much info. about it down here in continental Europe. Do you know ERIC GADD? Isnt he from Sweden, I loved his latest album RISE UP, very strong influenced by Prince, too ...

hmm... I know not much about other european funksters, but personally I think Eric Gadd sounds a bit forced, atleast his falsetto does. And a bit too cheesy for my taste. But he is not bad. In Norway we have Jarle Bernhoft. The funkiest mainstream act in norway.

Espen Lind responsible for the song When Susanna Cries and co-writing of Beyonce Irreplacable also has a pretty funky, yet embarrasing 90s princey background

Thanks for this thread, it interests me a lot.

In Spain (or in Catalonia, if you consider it an independent country wink), we have Guillamino, whose album Fang is said to be brilliant and very influenced by early 80's Prince. I have the CD at home, but I haven't listened to it yet, it's on my waiting list.

OH ... so this is a play on words. They use the French language to say 'shut the fuck up' without getting banned anywhere, real clever .... lol

the org is a rather odd (but always amusing) place

this is the EXACT sound that Prince has on MPLS/20Ten, but people (fans? really) dissed both albums, shrug

but oh! wait! wait a minute! if some new artist releases an album with this sound, then he/she is the funky as hell, the new saviour of funk!

but if Prince releases a new album with this sound,...then he's done, he's copying himself, he's desperate, he's out of ideas, etc rolleyes

fart

... me, I cant never get enough of that Purple Funk. Maybe it is because you always expect sth. special from the inventor of the Minneapolis-Sound and you get more critical if you become permanently dissed by your musical hero?! Whatever, just relax and enjoy this great musical output of these young followers!

I agree with enfantdumilieu. Prince has such a brilliant catalogue behind him that we always expect something more from him. We aren't satisfied with anything he releases.

But listening to some fresh voices recording exercises of admiration to their musical hero, sometimes brilliantly, can be exciting. It is to me.

You're welcome! I am glad that finally somebody in here takes notice of this great talent! And thank's for the video, I guess I've seen it a hundred times before but it's still breath-taking, I wished I could join one of his legendary concerts but so far I've missed them all, sh** ..... !!!

All of his Albums are excellent, but he sings mostly in French, so this might be not everybodies cup of tea ...

I've heard the whole album on wimp, a norwegian app similar to spotify. I think overall the albums is pretty good. It's not groundbreaking at all, and it's absolutely no 1999. Soundwise it is emulating the feel of 1999, the sound of The Time as well as some early Sheila E new wave funk. This just proves she has done her research on Prince pretty damn well. Even though she is almost copying the sound, she is bringing enough personality to the table to make it somewhat fresh in todays context. No classic, but a great fun listening to. The production is tight too.
