Electro-Funk fans - NAzz "The Hitmaker" review Any electro-funk fans out there? Wait, why do I even ask, this is a Prince fansite, so of course. I recommend giving NAzz "The Hitmaker" a listen, if you haven't already. Check out this review of his latest album, Gloria Euphoria: http://www.dominionofnewy...-hit-maker
I know he's been mentioned here before, but I'm surprised I don't hear about him here or elsewhere. Plus, full disclosure, I wrote the review, so if you like it or got a problem with it, you know who to blame/thank. Hope you enjoy the commentary & most of all the music!
He's channelling some serious Prince-ness on this release.

This album is exceptional good and I like your review of it! I tried to promote it here sometime in summer but received no feedback at all.
I would like to recommand "DEONIS - THE BREAKING POINT" to you, if you're into Electro-Funking, Prince-Ness music ... This album has been sadly overlooked, too. It's on bandcamp.com.

On "Hazardous" right now and the drum programming on this is exceptional. Listening to the first three songs got me thinking what does he use, a real Linn or just tweaked samples. "The Avenue" was ok, but the arrangement didn't work for me much. The only problem with this guy would be that he relies very heavily on Autotune. Now if he had used a vocoder or something I guess I would not say much on that. 1900 Hotline screams Prince (well most of this album is 1999 influenced). Screamer bangs pretty hard...that snare hits hard just like "Lost In Emotion". His lyrics are very simple and delivery leaves a lot of room, but his production is top notch. Purple High is ok, takes a cue from Purple Music. Annie Don't Go reminds me of William doing Prince on his debut solo release. Oh No You're So is a nice cut too...nice bass guitar work and the arrangement is smooth. This defintiley goes down though as the most Minneapolis funk influenced albums out released this year. This album is definitley devoted to the 1980 to 1984 era only. Recommended. Straight Jacket Funk Affair

The best songs are Hazardous and Screamer. Songs like the title track are so auto-tuned I can't listen to them. [Edited 10/20/11 14:55pm] "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

just checked out deonis. that album's tight. might have to buy it.
seems like we have similar tastes. i love hazardous and oh no you're so. and yeah, i agree the voice is the problem. team him up with a good vocalist, and it's gonna be hot. interestingly, when i interviewed him, and he said that altough it's mostly autotune, he actually uses a vocoder sometimes. can't say that i heard it on this album, so maybe it'll be on his next release.
just checked out your blog. nice. took up your recomendation of alison carney. i wanna rock right now is where it's at.

Actually, we decided not to publish it as an interview. I just used information from the interview in the album review. That's how I got his real name and found out that he plays all the instruments himself.

Aaah gotcha. I was taking that he did everything himself....I like this guy, he should have some guest vocalists or get really into producing because he definitley knows his sound. Straight Jacket Funk Affair

I downloaded this and I like it. It reminds me of Felix da house cat's Devin dazzle and the neon fever. It needs some guitar to get it nearer the purple sound of 1981-1984 it seems to be going for, but still enjoyable, I don't even mind the auto tune too much. | |

Kind of. I think Devin had more instruments like you mentioned in that album. I really liked the title track too...very melodic and dramatic. Romanthique and Ready 2 Wear were pretty good too.
He does need to add rhythm guitar and electric I agree and work on the songwriting. There is alot of room to breathe on Screamer, Oh No You're So and In My Car. Just seems like more should be there than it was. Straight Jacket Funk Affair
