sonic youth divorce! (kim and thurston)

Sonic Youth's supercouple splits after 27 years

A sad day for indie-rock.

Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore have split up after 27 years of marriage, their rep confirms to Us Weekly.

"Sonic Youth, with both Kim and Thurston involved, will proceed with its South American tour dates in November," their rep said in a statement. "Plans beyond that tour are uncertain. The couple has requested respect for their personal privacy and does not wish to issue further comment."

Married since 1984, Gordon, 58, and Moore, 53, have a 17-year-old daughter Coco.

Color me surprised at the fact they...MARRIED IN THE FIRST PLACE. neutral

I knew they dated but I didn't know they did all that. Oh well, they must've been apart for years before finally coming to that conclusion. shrug

Things just happen. No need to be sad or upset.

Maybe it just purely became a music partnership and less about being a couple. That's why I don't think going into business with your spouse is a good idea. Keep work and relationships seperate.

I was thinking that also. Why keep living a lie? I know they probably spent a good ten or fifteen years fucking, then realized they were better off as musical partners than "husband and wife". Blondie's Debbie Harry & Chris Stein are similar.

This is one music partnership that I thought would be together forever. I hope they can sort things out in an amicable way a) for their daughters sake, and b) for the music.

It would be sad if this spelled the end for SY.

I wouldn't go that extreme. Then again I'm not a fan of people who marry while having careers. Surprised they lasted this long actually...for some reason.

Their brilliance notwithstanding, I'm still like "why not just fuck and then move on?" lol It's rare that these type of partnerships work anyway. The only two couples who survived the odds until death took their partners away were Lux & Ivy of the Cramps and Ashford & Simpson. Most other couples either stay together for 10, 15, 20 years like Kim and Thurston and Chris & Debbie or fizzle out after 5. It happens.

I see your point, but Thurston and Kim were married for 27 yrs and were a couple before that too. That is a long time. I guess it's just came as a surprise to me that's all, I never knew their marriage was on the rocks.

What Moore said in a 2008 Interview.

Q: "You have a famously great marriage, which is virtually unheard of for a rock star, particularly when the spouse is also a bandmate. What's your secret?"

A: "There's no secret. We've never sold each other out on anything. I can easily follow the allure of wanting to go out and be with the boys, and play industrial noise and smoke pot and drink, but nothing replaces the reality of our relationship. I can't trade that for anything. I can't think of how or where I'd be without Kim's influence. And we're like any couple that's been together for close to 30 years. There's a genuine psychophysical connection. Sometimes I feel things happening in me, and I know that something's going on with her. When you're married and you have that kind of connection, you become really spiritually, psychologically connected. We grew up together, in a way."

I don't know why anyone would talk that deep about their marriage. I don't know, every time I see someone make lovey dovey comments about their marriage or relationship or whatever, I almost always think "cover up". I would love it if couples who are famous get asked about what keeps them together and they just say "because we are, next!" lol

Too me its really not bout them divorcing its bout one of the best alt rock groups most likely breaking up. A group that gave us masterpieces like Evol and Sister.

RIP Sonic Youth.

If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.
