TOP 5 ONE-HIT WONDERS OF THE '80s

What's your list looking like?

So far I've got:

5. Bow Wow Wow - I Want Candy

3. A-HA - Take On Me

4. Dead Or Alive - You Spin Me Round

1. Musical Youth - Pass The Dutchie

2. Neneh Cherry - Buffalo Stance

I'M NOT SAYING YOU'RE UGLY. YOU JUST HAVE BAD LUCK WHEN IT COMES TO MIRRORS AND SUNLIGHT!
RIP Dick Clark, Whitney Houston, Don Cornelius, Heavy D, and Donna Summer. rose

Dead Or Alive had a top 15 with Brand New Lover & also many dance chart hits & Neneh had a top 10 hit with Kisses On The Wind. A-HA also had the sun always shines on TV go top 20.

So i can't really count any of these except musical youth & Bow Wow Wow as 1 hit wonders. Bow Wow Wow especially lol

I vaguely remember Brand New Lover but can't recall Neneh's Kisses. That song by A-Ha doesn't ring a bell either. Were these UK hits only?

hmmm

4. Gary Numan - CARS

Nope, U.S. as well, but DOA & A-Ha i believe had quite a few hits in the UK.

Gary Numan is one, i mean i am a fan but cars is his only chart hit, and Musical Youth.. did they even have a 2nd album? lol

At one point a-ha had 13 straight UK top 10's, they released 9 studio albums, sold 40million overall, 2 US hits technically, though the impact of the first one will have them also listed as a US one hit wonder. Ironically worldwide a-ha are bigger than other bands of their days, the group lasted 1982-2010, their final tour in 2010 brought in over 100 million worlwide shows (83).

Cutting Crew - Died in your arms tonight

Europe - The Final Countdown

Champaign - How bout us

Honourable Mention

Nena- 99 Luftballoons/ 99 Red Balloons the song exists in German and English

The Honey Drippers - Sea of Love (Had Robert Plant in it, apparently it was a one off cover of the 1959 Phil Phillips Song)

Respectable - Mel and Kim

She had We Connect which peaked at Number 35 pop and 14 dance right after, technically a hit single.

Yeah i do to, Don is still the man!! Plus i dig jack Wagner, liked his albums, though GH was pushing him as another "Rick Springfield" which was unfair since RIck was already an established artist prior to GH and well after. But they where trying to milk it, and shit, All I Need got to number 2.

I know your a huge A-Ha fan(;, and since i bought Hunting High & Low.. not to mention East Of The Sun. I was sorry i did not check them out sooner!

Oh def, great choices of albums there because you got to see/hear two sides of a-ha that were drastcially different though only about 5 years apart. THOSE changes are what caused america to turn away, a-ha was pushed on the scene as WB's answer to Duran Duran, the good looks, magazine covers all were done by a-ha, but it was a double edged sword because a-ha were not about that, and actually hated the attention, Duran thrived in it, a-ha shyed away, and as one label exec told them in 1986, if you turn away from america, its not going to be here when you look back, and sure enough it wasnt. So a-ha's growing as songwriters, musicians, album aritsts, were the demise in america for them. THOUGH go figure when they showed up in 2005 they sold out NYC's "Irving Plaza" in 7minutes, and there final 3 shows in 2010 in NYC's Nokia sold out quicker than any artist since!

Yes!, these guys are extremly underrated. A-HA & the Pet Shop Boys years ago i laughed at them... now i adore them. Got into both of them at the same time & i am obsessed now lol, A-HA really are a great versatile group, and the fact they can still sell out in America despite only having 2 top 20's is impressive. Although it's far from there best, Take On Me i hear it a few times a week in stores no joke! they play that song as if it is current. So the success of that song is still going big

and the band are at peace with it, alot of times artists resent things, but as Magne of a-ha said that"song is still out there working its balls off on our behalf". And i think the respect finally came their way in 2000 when they returned after a 7 year recording break, there was a huge difference and i compare it to what the Beatles had. when a-ha came out they shot up and there was a mania around it, sure smaller in size but it was huge in all countries, then they started to change, around East of the Sun they were at their "Rubber Soul" era, where fans faded away somewhat to their "old teeny bopper image" then they had a hiatus came back in 2000 with a string of releases that were their most diverse artistic stuff, they were now not 20-25 year olds they were late 30's, and the albums from 2000-2010 including the last tour where amazing works and finally got them praise from their peers and media.

Neneh Cherry had more hits then Buffalo Stance, at least over here in Europe:

Buddy X

Manchild

Woman

I've got you under my skin

and of course her smash hit with Yousou n'dour: Seven seconds.

Neneh Cherry had hit with Youssou N'Dour, 7 seconds. Speaking of African Music, Mory Kante had a hit with Yeke Yeke in 1987. (in Europe anyway).
M Pop Music was from the 1980s as far as I can remember.
Does anyone know who did One Night in Bangkok? That's the thing with those 1 hit wonders. You remember the song but not the artist.

Bobby, it was Murry Head, musical artist, who scored a hit with One Night in Bangkok.

I think that song was written by one of the two Abba males.

You're referring to "Come On Eileen" by Dexy's Midnight Runners (1983) lol although Men Without Hats could also be considered a one-hit wonder.I only heard one hit single from them,"The Safety Dance".

"Our House" is by Madness.

Yes!! That song was huge here, especially when a local Maori singer "Prince Tui Teka" did a cover of it. The song is by an Italian Australian and sums up the working class humour of Italian, Greek, Lebanese and Maltese immigrants to Australia in the 60s and 70s.
