I'M NOT SAYING YOU'RE UGLY. YOU JUST HAVE BAD LUCK WHEN IT COMES TO MIRRORS AND SUNLIGHT! RIP Dick Clark, Whitney Houston, Don Cornelius, Heavy D, and Donna Summer.
Also, I read a lot about a early soul group called the Vibrations that used to give the Tempts a run for their money.
The Isley Brothers were good competition during the "Shout" days. All three original Isleys used to dance like crazy then. So were The Contours.
I vote that we pit The Isley Bros. against The O'Jays. Now there's a battle!!!!

The 4 Tops were worthy competition but nobody can beat the tempting Temptations!!
O'Jays could.

OJays were good competition but I dont think nobody tops the Temptations. Me personally, my fav group is The Stylistics but I just dont see no other group topping the Tempts

With all this excitement on The Tempts, The Tops and other legendary vocal groups...it's time for someone to do a battle of the groups thread. To make it interesting, how about a 1970s battle of the groups thread?
The Temptations
The Four Tops
The Stylistics
The O'Jays
The Delfonics
Blue Magic
Enchantment
The Chi-Lites
The Manhattans
The Dells
I believe I know which one will be eliminated right off the bat...

Those two groups at the bottom are a good pick to be eliminated but I love Enchantment more.

The O'Jays are my 2nd favorite after the Tempts, you dirty dog!
Tempts not only set the bar with their dance routines but also each member had intricate part in their harmony and also got a lead part. From bass to male soprano, they had the right mix of voices for that unmatchable style then you add the Motown sound and magic is what you get. The O'Jays are the best trio and do just well but they aren't the pioneers that the Tempts are.
silverchild, you got one helluva list there. My mother would respect it since her thing were the vocal groups of yore. That would be a great thread and battle. I know which 5 I would go HARD for.
Stevie Wonder = EARTH
Prince = WIND
Chaka Khan = FIRE
Sade = WATER
the ELEMENTS of MUSIC
I honestly couldn't really compare the Temptations to the other groups, they stood out in more ways than one both onstage...AND OFF.
Well said. There's no wonder why the group has gone through 20+ personnel changes over six decades and hold their own through every triumph and obstabcle. WOW! The Tempts will never be duplicated...NEVER!

True! The amazing thing is even with Eddie, Melvin, David, Dennis, Paul gone, they were able to still have hits until the beginning of the millennium! That deserves a special place in music history. The Supremes nor the Four Tops accomplished that!

Yep. We may hear alot of craziness about Motown, but The Tempts, from a group perspective, have the most enduring legacy.

Pretty much. Money troubles, drug addictions, domestic problems, suicide, deaths at early ages, etc.

I love The Temptations but for me nobody tops the run that Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes had with Teddy Pendergrass. It was a very brief run but, damn, they crammed some incredible music into the few years they were together.
