This is GOD's PROPERTY. The founder of God's Property will KILL U for not recognizing them. They were kind of like the Sounds of Blackness. They've been around a long time, but didn't famous until Kirk put them on the map (and took the good singers with him). David Mann was one of them (but Tyler Perry ended up getting him).

God's Property seemed to have faded once Kirk returned to The Family... I just remembered seeing Salt on the video and had my mind blown like "wow, I didn't know Salt got all religious". lol

He didn't return to the family. After he got sued by GP for royalities, the rest of the albums have been uner "Kirk Franklin."

He did for a 1NC project, but the title says Kirk Franklin presents 1NC.

Just the remix. The original version didn't have the sample.

When this song came out, I was working in radio. I worked for 3 different stations (R&B, Smooth Jazz and Gospel) which were all owned by the same parent company. The Gospel program director at the time wouldn't play the remix version with Salt because he felt it was blasphemy. He only played this version.

I remember when one of the board operators switched out the versions, he called the station and threatened to fire the guy on the spot. He was a stickler for this. He wouldn't even play a secular artist that had a gospel or inspirational song on their album. I remember we tried to get him to play Blackstreet's "The Lord Is Real" and he refused. He also refused to play Dave Hollister's gospel work.

Gospel purists piss me off. It's like some of these artists if they feel the anointing they would want to express it and gospel purists just want them to stick to what they were doing but that ain't right because you shouldn't tell someone who was formerly R&B to not do something they feel it was their nature to do in the first place. Reminds me of Patti LaBelle's comments about not being allowed in her church anymore because she sang "Lady Marmalade". Hypocritical bitches...

In all fairness, he was a genuinelly nice guy. So was his wife. Once he took a vow, he stuck to it. He just didn't think secular music and artists belonged on his station.

I remember he had a long discussion with Kirk Franklin about it. Kirk asked him why he wouldn't play the remix and he explained his point. Kirk understood it and said that is one reason he put the 2 versions on the album.

He also wouldn't play the remix to the followup single either "You Are The Only One."

^ Oh. Well as long as he didn't have "hate" in his heart then I can understand but I never got the point, oh well, least I can respect why he did it if he did it respectfully rather than just acting like a snob lol

I told my Mom that this was a slowed down version of One Nation... and she nearly had a hissy fit. lol Told me about how gospel artists should NEVER sample from "worldly music", about being pure in the Lord and whatever. Next thing you know we're in her car and she's blasting Kirk's latest album. falloff

I was just coming to syat that I don't know why people ALWAYS go to the remix/ radiop version of the song. lol The original is better. But I believe George and crew are still credited as co-writers of the original version as well.

God's Property is the best gospel album of all time, IMO.

Optimistic headbang

^ "I'll Take You There" was so widely accepted especially during that time period (1971, 1972) that if you called the song a song about unity among races, religions, sexes and creeds it would hold the same message even if it was described by some as "gospel".

Same with "Optimistic". It didn't seem like simply a "gospel" song. I mean it was but there were a lot of "R&B"/"pop" songs that used the same message that "Optimistic" used, a reason it was also widely accepted. smile

That's why I said it depends. Lovesexy is my favorite lp of all time, and people bark when I tell 'em it's a Contemporary Christian lp. shrug If Eye No, Anna Stesia, Glam Slam, Lovesexy, Dance On, I Wish U Heaven, and Positivity aren't CC songs then I don't know what is.

The problem with gospel music now though is that once Kirk semi-"broke through" mainstream-wise every other gospel artist tried to copy him. So now every gospel artist is either urban comtemporary or Hillsong.

In my opinion, Lovesexy gives off an inspirational music vibe (much like Donna Summer's '80s records at the time). The only songs in that album that give off a gospel vibe to me were "Eye No" and "Positivity".

nod It's like "follow the money trail". That's why whenever I DO hear a gospel song that is old school and traditional I actually cheer lol makes me wanna clap and stomp my feet like people used to do. cool

It all becomes a semantic war. lol Sly and Stevie would qualify as inspirational pop, maybe even CC with Stevie, at times.

A lot of artists today, like Mary Mary and Out of Eden before then, will tell you that they are NOT gospel artists, but inspirational pop/ contemporary Christian. Over the years, CC was just a title used by white artists that didn't sing hymns or "traditional" church songs, which is the MAIN reason people would bark when I would say that Lovesexy is a CC album. Now the CC and IP titles are rampant within the industry.
