To be fair to all, we need a top 7 list for funk, rock and punk otherwise we are leaving out toooooo myany artists that should be mentioned. The 70's was a great decade for live music and music in general.

Or to be fair, how about a top 21 of funk, punk and rock. It only makes sense. smile

I forgot Patti Smith also, who's a bridge of punk and rock anyways. lol

I am not going to use the limits the OP wants razz

My personal favourites:

Rock

Big Star (the godfathers of power-pop)

Funk

Sly and the Family stone (or should I say: soul / funk / rock / psychedelica-crossover?)

George Clinton (= Parliament and Funkadelic)

Singer-songwriters

Nick Drake

Joni Mitchell

Richard Thompson

Electronical music

Kraftwerk (just recently i began to discover their music)

Horse category

Van Morrison (too eclectic to be put into one category: singer-songwriter, music mixing blues / soul / jazz / country and folk, the greatest soulsinger, a demanding bandleader, spiritual poet and grumpy old man in one).

Adding more to my "list": Diana. Honestly, she had some bad-ass cuts in the '70s!

As hard as they may try to compare, they just can't. I mean there's great talent and stars today but not in the way it was back then. nod

I could have had them (James too) but I associate them more with the 60's even though I know they did some of their best stuff in the 70's

EW&F is a good pick, too, I could easily have put them on my list, but I am probably more familiar with their hits than their albums, so I went with someone I knew more completely.

I associate them as '60s too but they were just as great in the '70s if not greater IMHO (even James, as great as his '60s records are, I think his '70s records are, for the most part, underrated).

No offense but I think we went from

Top 7 70's artists'

to

Top 12 70's artist

to

Top 20 artist for the 60's and 70's.

If we keep going in this direction this thread is going to turn into top 25 artist for the last 50 years of the 20th century by page 7.

Yes confused and Abba too, they were most definitely 70's.

Actually I am fortunate that I was born in 1961 and the 70's made up my entire teen years. The music was wonderful and very diverse. I think that is one thing that becomes very clear as different people bring up their favorites. Incredible diversity and talent in each category. No wonder one artist could not walk away with 5 Grammy's each awards show.

eek Where do you keep all this? I had a lot on tape or casette and that just got trashed. I had stuff like the "Moody Blues" and "Yes" and "Jethro Tull" ; not the best but decent stuff none the less.
