Sylvia Robinson (1936 - 2011) RIP

Sylvia Vanterpool Robinson, 75, often credited as the Mother of Hip-Hop, died today at 6:28 a.m. EST from congestive heart failure.

Sylvia is revered in the rap community as the producer who took Chic’s sample of “Good Times” and with the help of the Sugar Hill Gang, turned it into “Rapper’s Delight,” the first hip-hop record to go mainstream.

Sylvia had been ill for approximately five months before passing this morning at Meadowlands Hospital in Secaucus, New Jersey, family spokesman Greg Walker told Sister 2 Sister.

Along with producing “Rapper’s Delight,” Sylvia also produced “The Message” by Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five. She didn’t just work behind the scenes, though. Sylvia was half of the duo Mickey & Sylvia.

“Pillow Talk” and “Love is Strange” are two of Sylvia’s most popular songs.

In addition to her professional accomplishments, Sylvia, who was married to the late Joseph Robinson Sr., was mother to three sons, Joseph Robinson Jr., Leland Robinson and Rhondo Robinson.

It's sad to hear she has passed on, give her all the credit for running Sugarhill Records the way she did, that label put out some great songs.

The woman had one amazing, if a bit, weird journey. She was originally a singer of jazz and rhythm and blues standards (as Little Sylvia) in the early 1950s when she was only 14 years old (billed as Little Sylvia), then after hooking up with Mickey Baker, she took guitar and the duo later had a hit with "Love is Strange", which to this day, remains a rock and roll/R&B standard. Then after the duo's success peaked in the early '60s, they split and Sylvia found work behind the scenes, first creating the label All Platinum in 1966, later including the subsidiaries Stang and Vibration, in 1967 and 1968 in New Jersey. There that's where the hits "Love on a Two Way Street", "Sexy Mama", "Not on the Inside", "Shame, Shame, Shame", etc., came from. Then in 1973, while pitching "Pillow Talk" to Al Green, who passed on it because of his religious beliefs, Sylvia recorded it herself and had a top ten pop/R&B hit with it. Then six years later, she found herself as a pioneer of hip-hop by releasing "Rapper's Delight" on Sugar Hill Records and also helped in the production of "The Message" so indeed a woman whose contributions shouldn't be forgotten.

Rest in paradise.

Everybody and I mean everybody is checking out. Sylvia was NO joke as a businesswoman. Vanity Fair, of all mags, did a GREAT article on her a few years back.

The versions Sylvia produced for the song "Love on a Two Way Street" (which original artist Lezli Valentine co-wrote without being credited):

Lezli's:

The Moments':

Both versions were recorded in 1968 with the latter being issued in 1969 and reissued in 1970. The 1970 reissue later became the hit (The Moments' version).

No prob. I wish I could tell you what year it was- I know it is after 2005, but most likely before 2010. It was about the founding of Sugar Hill Records

sad R.I.P., honey. You were a pioneer of an entire movement of historic music and hopefully, others are giving you props and singin' your praises. Without u, there never would have been Hip Hop. U started it. Love to her family at this awful time.

Not very much could compete with that sensuous "pillow talk" of hers. Songstress, music pioneer and savvy businessperson all in one.
