Summer of '84

This Billboard #1s from Summer 1984 -

June 9 - June 16 - "Time After Time" Cyndi Lauper

June 23 - July 6 - "The Reflex" Duran Duran

July 7 - August 4 - "When Doves Cry" Prince

That's some pretty quintessential '80s right there, all in the same summer.

1984 Is one of the best years in music ever imo, and the best of the 80's as well...

There is so many powerhouse albums frome every genre that came out that year....

Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

Five yrs ago, orger Mazerati posted this Billboard Top 20 from summer (Aug) of the glorious year 1983:

1. Every Breath You Take - The Police
2. Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) - Eurythmics
3. She Works Hard For The Money - Donna Summer
4. Is There Something I Should Know - Duran Duran

5. Flashdance...What A Feeling - Irene Cara
6. Electric Avenue - Eddy Grant
7. Maniac - Michael Sembello
8. Never Gonna Let You Go - Sergio Mendes
9. Stand Back - Stevie Nicks
10. Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' - Michael Jackson
11. It's A Mistake - Men At Work
12. Our House - Madness
13. (Keep Feeling) Fascination - The Human League
14. Hot Girls In Love - Loverboy
15. Cuts Like A Knife - Bryan Adams
16. Come Dancing - The Kinks
17. 1999 - Prince
18. China Girl - David Bowie
19. Rock Of Ages - Def Leppard
20. I'll Tumble 4 Ya - Culture Club

I was 8 yrs old at that time, so a little young and not fully into it, but I had teen brothers. I'd say "my decade" was more 90s and I enjoyed it, but which top 20 would I rather listen to? That one ^^ for sure!

LOVED the early to mid 80's!!!!! It's when I was REALLY gettin' into music, hardcore! Loved the music, the colors, the styles...it was so coool! The 80's always gets made fun of, been then again, it's usually by people who grew up listenin' to The Spice Girls or N"SYNC, so take that for what it is, lol!!!!

Whenever you say that you can't, that's when you need to be trying.

1984, The best summer in music ever. The only summer I remember very vividly, thanks to the music.

Eh, I don't think the summer of 1984 was any better than the summer of 1974, 1964 or 1954. Heck, the summer of 1994 produced a lot of great music too. I think most of you probably have an emotional attachment to that era that colours your judgement a bit.

Let us not speak of the summer of 2004 and I am not feeling too optimistic about 2014 either. confused

I guess you're right;)

But honestly, if I had a time machine, the 80's would be the decade I will travel to.

^^Agree. As I said, I think according to my age, I'm more late 80s & 90s person, and I enjoyed the 90s. There were unique and exciting things there, but I think it was a confusing time, culturally. And then, I think possibly, that was the end of a cohesive generational identity - an identity that, while diverse, was still shared and oppositional to the older generation. Something happened w/ the internet and everything. I don't know. Here's an article about the "demise of mono-culture" or of zeitgeist. I don't agree w/ everything 100%, but w/ about 90% of this article.
