When Tina made a statement about Aretha's reaction to Beyonce's comments, didn't Aretha claim that she has never met Tina???

Tina had a few nice even great songs in the 70s with her hubby. and that's about it. sure Aretha had her ups and downs. but Tina - starting with and including Private Dancer - made exclusively totally uninspired generic music-by-numbes chart fodder and forgettable crap. I gave all the albums to charity over the years or to friends who don't know any better music and might eventually enjoy it. though of course the main problem was not Tina but the material. even Arethas far better voice and singing style couldn't have saved such sub-par fluffs

someone had to say it shrug

The Compromise Theory:
Based on my analysis, I believe the government faked the plane crash and demolished the WTC North Tower with explosives.
The South Tower, in a simultaneous but unrelated plot was brought down by actual terrorists.
Is it a deal?

I think perhaps you are being a little harsh but I generally agree. The big difference between the two of them is the quality of the material that they recorded. Any singer is only as good as the material they are given to sing. Aretha's highs are much higher than Tina's and Tina's lows are much lower than Aretha's.

Yes most of her material was rubbish Aretha had columbia/Clive etc who did Tina have Ike the

nut case he would'nt let any outsiders near her Phil Spector made his way in but what a job he had

getting Tina to himself.

What 70 year can sing LIVE she always does she did it powerfully in 2008/2009 tour she deserves

credit.

love this comment on her voice biggrin

Ms. Turner's voice is one of the more peculiar instruments in pop. It's three-tiered, with a nasal low register, a yowling, cutting middle range and a high register so startlingly clear it sounds like a falsetto. She used to just belt away in her middle range, but for ''Private Dancer,'' she learned where to hold back; now, she uses contrasts to build suspense.

The thing about Tina is, the average Joe probably hasn't dug deep enough into her catalog with Ike to discover what a vocal powerhouse she was. I'm always discovering Tina gems that I've never heard before. Most people are only familiar with the the standard Ike & Tina stuff but, like I said, it's the deeper, lesser known stuff that has made the hairs stand up on my arms!!! Like someone stated earlier, a lot of Ike & Tina was hit and miss. When they missed, they really missed. But, when they hit, it was sheer ecstasy!!!!!

I said this before but it doesn't help that Ike and Tina's catalog is such a mess. They must have recorded for half a dozen different labels! It's easy enough to get some compilations that feature most of the highlights but if you want to dig deeper it can be a little difficult.

Sue, Loma, Kent, Warner Bros, United, Tomato, Harmony, Philles, Tangerine, Blue Thumb, Minit, Sunset, Pompeii, Capitol, Valient, Liberty, United Artists.

The label they recorded more albums on was United Artists, which I think was their last label before Tina split up from him in '76.

Absolutely! Their catalog is quite a mess! So many labels over the years, so many songs released as singles but never part of an actual album. I say for about the past 5 or 6 years, every few months I go on an Ike & Tina search on I-tunes and amazon and, I swear, I end up finding songs that weren't there before! It's been like a really cool treasure hunt for me. Meanwhile, I bet there are still a lot of their songs that have never received a digital release.

Aretha said that she followed Ike and Tina on stage at The Grand in Detroit and that Tina was pregnant, but they didn't speak. She also said after the brouhaha with The Knowles and Tina after the Grammys that they had never met.

Well this pic seems to say something different.

Of course Anna Mae could have leaned over and just said, "Hi Aretha and Lena", and Franklin didn't count that as a meeting LOL.

Of note, at this ESSENCE AWARDS show in '95. the press tried to get Aretha, Tina, Patti (who was there singing a tribute to Aretha) ands also there were Chante Moore, Karyn White, and more divas to all get together for a classic diva photo, Tina was the one who declined.

I think we all know why. To be frank, I truly believe Tina has a issue with being classified as an R&B diva/singer. If that was a different show and the singers were from a different genre, I believe she would have happily participated in the photo. Although I love Tina, I've always had a problem with her seemingly trying to distance and separate herself from other R&B female singers. Another example was the VH1 Divas show. Why was she the only one not to participate in the "I'm Every Woman" finale? I heard it was because she did not want to share the stage with Chaka and Nippy. And I believe it.

That is true. But I also think, and my mama has brought it up, that she felt she wasn't really respected by her peers anyway especially compared to how the rockers treated her. Which can probably explain why she hated being tagged as R&B after she left Ike. It's actually understandable.

Oh I definately agree that Tina has never been given credit for what she contributed to Soul/R&B music by critics, the public or other artists in the particular genre. I think a lot of her bitterness towards the genre probably has a lot to do with Ike, also. And she has stated several times that when she was down and out, her white audience and friends were the only ones supporting her. But, I guess I feel if an African American Awards show is honoring you and they ask you to do something as simple as take a photo with the other guests, that wasn't asking very much. Unless, of course, she had a personal beef with another person who was asked to participate in the photo (i.e, Aretha) wink . I remember a rumor back in '85 that, after Diana presented her with an award, Tina snubbed her backstage at the Grammies b/c she felt Diana did not offer any support when she was struggling.

So yeah, I understand her frustration about certain things as far as black music is concerned. But, that's no reason to turn your nose up at the music and the audience that made you a star in the first place. If she would have started out doing Rock back in the 60's, she would not have had a career.

Tina felt like that with most of the R&B artists when her situation with Ike went down. I think it's something she's never got over.

Huh, I never really thought about how to qualify Tina's music but if you imagine that the Ike years never happened and that Private Dancer is her debut I guess she is at least as much pop/rock as she is soul/R & B. Pretty much every black singer is to a degree pigeonholed as being an R & B singer. Charley Pride is one of the few that springs to mind as having completely escaped that label.

Perhaps I need to better familiarise myself with her '80s-present recordings but I never really considered Tina to be a rock singer either. For my tastes her music is too slick and poppy to be considered rock. Has she recorded anything with live drums and bass that features loud guitars? To me that is rock music. I wonder what some of her songs would sound like coming from a white singer and if they would still be considered R & B?

Yeah, I never believed she didn't wanna do it because it was a "black film". She didn't wanna do it because she had already lived that story. I think she was offered the role of Shug if I'm not mistaken (Patti's refusal was because of kissing another woman).
