There is bo comparison between these two women. Aretha is a singer's singer, period! Tina has a raw earthy style, but let her try jazz, opera, torch ballads, hip-hop soul and modern r&b. Just like I though, it would be a disaster. Honestly Turner is more of entertainer than she is singer. She growls on every song and really she can't dance, she does that wild wiggling shish and shakes that wig - that is not a dancing. Aretha hasn't ever been much of a showwoman and her dancing is not so great, but her accolades from Kings, Queens, Popes, Presidents, Congress, civic leaders and her many accomplishments trump Turner for a 10 count. I have never heard anyone say Tina Turner is a great singer. Music Royalty in Motion | |

I think it's pretty obvious that even you don't believe that Tina is in any way in the same league as Aretha. Tina has had some good songs but she must bow down before the might of the one true Queen. | |

omg, Aretha got their fair share of CO-written soul classics in the late-60s, that's why she is the QUEEN, but I still think Diana and Tina nail her, even if they cannot write shit, lol
of course, any guy dissing Tina's vocal abilities immediately loses his credibility,

Aretha's classics: "Today I Sung the Blues" "It Won't Be Long" "Skylark" "Runnin' Out of Fools" "One Step Ahead" "Cry Like a Baby" "I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You" "Respect" "Baby I Love You" "(You Make Me Feel Like A) Natural Woman" "Chain of Fools" "Sweet Sweet Baby (Since You've Been Gone)" "Ain't No Way" "The House That Jack Built" "Think" "I Say a Little Prayer" "Call Me" "Don't Play That Song for Me" "Spirit in the Dark" "Spanish Harlem" "Daydreaming" "Rocksteady" "Oh Me Oh My (I'm a Fool For You Baby)" "Angel" "Mister Spain" "Until You've Come Back to Me" "I'm in Love" "Giving Him Something He Can Feel" "If You Look Into Your Heart" "United Together" "Love All the Hurt Away" "Jump To It" "Get It Right" "Freeway of Love" "Who's Zoomin' Who" "Sisters Are Doin' It for Themselves" "I Knew You Were Waiting for Me" "Jimmy Lee" "A Deeper Love (Pride)" "Willing to Forgive" "A Rose Is Still a Rose"
Tina's classics: "A Fool in Love" "It's Gonna Work Out Fine" "River Deep Mountain High" "Bold Soul Sister" "I'm Gonna Take You Higher" "Proud Mary" "Working Together" "Nutbush City Limits" "Sexy Ida" "Delilah's Power" "Let's Stay Together" "What's Love Got to Do With It" "You Better Be Good to Me" "Private Dancer" "Show Some Respect" "We Don't Need Another Hero" "Typical Male" "Two People" "Simply the Best" "I Don't Wanna Fight"
---- Both of them have had some classic tunes over the years but I think Aretha's wins on the songs' impact, in particular "Respect", "Natural Woman", "Think" and "I Never Loved a Man". | |

Also their vocals have a different flow. Aretha's more based on emotion (not saying Tina's isn't) but emotion seems to be the overall theme of her records (hence why her impact on female R&B/pop was so massive in the '60s and '70s). Tina's was more based on energy. The more faster, the more raucous Tina would get. I think when it came to uptempo rock-soul, no one did it better than Tina and Ike. I couldn't see her doing a simple pop/jazz record though she does sound decent when she does do it (like she did with Herbie). Even at her age, it wouldn't be Tina. Aretha however don't have to worry about it because her sound was all over the place anyway as RnBAmbassador pointed out. It's just a matter of opinion anyways and both of them are great at what they do in their own ways. | |

Not sure if you read the post but earlier I made the point that Aretha's Queen of Soul: The Atlantic Recordings was essentially five hours of great material. Can you make a similar compilation of Tina's material that stands up? My problem with Tina is that even at her peak her recordings were very patchy.
Specifically, in what ways do you think that Tina is superior? The only clear edge I think she has is that she is/was a much more explosive live performer but even there that edge is primarily visual. If you listen to an Aretha live album vs. a Tina live album I would argue that Aretha still comes out ahead. You need to see Tina to appreciate her live performance.
Honestly, I'm not a huge fan of Tina, I dig some of the stuff with Ike but after that she kind of lost me. If you had to pick her five best songs what would they be? I find it extremely unlikely that you will sway my opinion but I'll at least consider it if you can wow me with some amazing songs that Tina has done. | |

your point is noble
my point is: other than the 60s and early 70s hits, was Aretha's music that good???
it reminds me of the McCartney fans: after 1973 he has only delireved like 3 or even 5 TRULY great songs...but his fans keep praising him...

For me it's simple. Aretha was head and shoulders better than Tina in the '60s and '70s. Say the '50s was a tie because neither one of them recorded much. That leaves the '80s to the present. Now, I think you could make an argument that the '80s was a tie but I'll give it to Tina since she was a bigger star. The '90s? Tina had one big hit in the early '90s but otherwise neither one of them has done much of note over the last twenty years. The difference is that, although Aretha's peak was relatively brief, the music she recorded circa 1967-1973 was so good that even if that was all she did her legacy would still be greater than Tina's. Further, Aretha's Columbia recordings display versatility that Tina lacks. By any objective measure I don't see how Tina's catalog of music stands up to Aretha's.
You seem to be making the case that because Aretha had a golden era that that is somehow a strike against her but I would argue that Tina never had anything close to the run that Aretha had from 1967-1973. I would also argue that Aretha never made nearly as many bad albums as Tina did with Ike in the early-mid '60s. There were some good-great live albums sprinkled in there but have you ever tried listening to those albums? Very patchy. | |

Aretha is a tiny bit overated while Tina is slightly underated in my opinion Tina is just that bit better Tina's voice is so unique she screams look at me when she hits the stage those legs, voice, hair etc. Before the grammys there was never any beef with the 2 of them it all blew up when Beyonce annouced her as the Queen. I have proof Aretha met Tina before heres the photo deep down we all knew they must met either back in 60's chitlin circuit or 90's etc
