Here's the incident in short terms:

  • Beyonce was performing at the Grammy Awards and mentioned a bunch of legends she was influenced by (Aretha included), then at the end, she said something to the effect of "no one has influenced me more than the Queen herself, Ms. Tina Turner" and then Tina performed (solo and with Beyonce).
  • Aretha commented that she felt she had rubbed feathers the wrong way to be overlooked. In other words, "this young heifer better understand I'M the queen."
  • Mathew attacked Aretha saying how wrong was she for assuming Beyonce disrespected her and that Beyonce "only did what she was told".
  • Aretha made a statement that she would change the title from "Queen of Soul" to "Empress of Soul" (that didn't last long lol And Gladys is the "empress" lol)
  • Tina stayed quiet the entire time, probably laughing at the situation. lol

I remember that, and she pretty much crowned Tina the "Queen of Soul'. I was surprised when I heard Beyonce say that too, because I know, and many of ReeRee's longtime fans know, that Tina is not the Queen of Soul, hmph! and this is in no way disrespecting Tina's contributions to music, but everybody and their mama, and anyone else who has any sense, knows that Auntie ReeRee is the "Queen of Soul'...end of story. Beyonce should have known better than trying to strip Aretha's title like that.no no no! When I heard Auntie ReeRee made a comment about what Beyonce said, I swore Auntie ReeRee was going to kick Beyonce's ass, and that would have been one heck of a wig and weave-pulling fight. lol popcorn

Yeah I read so many negative comments giving to Beyonce that night and after Aretha made her statements, most of them were like "GO ARETHA!!! TELL THAT BITCH!" I was actually quite taken back by those comments to be honest. eek

Really hard to make a comparison there, actually.

Aretha was a SINGER in a totally different league.

Tina was an entertainer in a totally different league.

But, for my money, I'd rather hear Aretha.

Tina was accepted by white people in ways Aretha wasn't. If you threw concerts across oceans, Turner's attendance numbers and demographic differences would likely smoke Franklin. She's known for her on-stage style and presence, her figure... In the black community, however, Aretha is Aretha. She has instant respect and credibility. Not only for her voice but what she meant to folks during that time period.

Tina Turner was always a bigger name than her work. How many gems does she really have? Just stop and think about it. Stack up all her supposed classics against Aretha and the two aren't even in the same ballpark. When you get down to the nitty gritty the Queen of Soul wins easily.

i don't like to compare artists really. they both are legendary and deservingly so. HOWEVER.. lol

I'LL TAKE TINA ALL DAY EVERYDAY!!! one of the best shows i've ever been to. I have a 2 disc set of Aretha's 'hits' and that's sufficient for me. with TINA, i buy each release!! to me she's always been more electrifying. vocally more raw and powerful. both women are soulful, but Tina, to me, is coming right from the gut. and i feel there's more versatility. no right or wrong. to each their own. so i choose TINA!!!

biggrin

yeahthat and,

tina's boldness in going for the rock scene was like taking a giant leap into a world no other black female has dared to go and be successful at it. tina's body rocked. might as well say that she held hands over the waters and stood toe to toe with such greats as mic jagger, david bowie, as well as other great brit rock music men.

tina represents "true grit." she has great strength of mind and endure much adversity with the courage to keep moving forward.

i luv tina for her "true grit."

I prefer both of them in the 60's and 70's but at least Aretha until the late 90's still had her voice and could whip up a smash like A Rose Is Still A Rose. Tina's music was pure shit in the 80's. I can't stand that cheesy ass 80's pop.

if you think about it, neither Tina nor Aretha have classic "albums", more like monster-classic singles. But Private Dancer (the album) IS a classic.

Tina's 60s stuff with Ike is still fresh, badass and vital . But her 80s stuff is still fresh and very well-known...Aretha's??? bored2 Aretha NEVER had something as big as WLWTDWI or The Best after the 70s...

[Edited 9/30/11 11:33am]

Really? I find it extremely hit and miss, much more miss than hit. Ike really had trouble finding decent material to record and most of those albums have far too much filler.

This thread is:

Here's how I look at it, Aretha's box set Queen of Soul: The Atlantic Recordings is roughly five hours of fantastic music, and that's just 1967-1976. Can you compile a five hour collection of Tina's music that comes anywhere near that kind of quality? No, you can't. Aretha wins!

Plus Aretha has a ton of great but overlooked music on Columbia. Give the recent Take a Look: Aretha Franklin Complete on Columbia box set a listen and compare that to the albums Ike and Tina were releasing in the early-mid sixties. Ree wins again!

I'll give Tina credit for arguably being relevent for longer than Aretha but as far as the quality of the material goes Aretha is miles ahead of Tina. No doubt about it.

As a pop star, sure, I'll give Tina the win. But who cares about being a pop star? I want quality music and in that department Tina is sorely lacking.

JoeTyler, do you honestly believe that Tina's recordings are better than Aretha's? If so you and I are going to break things down decade by decade until you realise how wrong you are!

That's right "Auntie ReeRee" is the Queen of Soul, and she will make sure no one robs her of that title.lol When I saw a recent interview with Wendy Williams and Auntie ReeRee, Wendy was 'treading lightly' during that interview because she knew Auntie ReeRee would put her in check with a quickness. lol I was laughing when Wendy made some comments about something Auntie ReeRee probably would have done, and Auntie ReeRee responded by saying something like "No I wouldn't, but you probably would" and Wendy looked scared and shocked, and segwayed into talking about something else real quick. lol

They really take those royalty titles seriously. I remember when Ashanti came out and her labelmates were "crowning" her the Princess of Hip hop/Soul. Mary did an interview and basically said that they had better not forget who the Queen of hip hop/Soul was. I was like, "really?" neutral

Aretha's musical output between 1960 and 1985 composes of some of the greatest works in the last 50 years. Tina stands out as an entertainer with, unfortunatly, not that much great musical work. Musically, Aretha and Tina just does not compare.

Tina Turner (born Annie Mae Bullock) and Aretha Louise Franklin are two very different performers. One's a hell of a singer/pianist/songwriter, another one's a hell of a singer/dancer/entertainer. One's from Memphis by way of Detroit, another's from Nutbush by way of St. Louis. One's the Queen of Soul, another's the Queen of Pop/Rock. The only similarity they have is their careers have surpassed the 50th year date. Otherwise, I can take Tina and Aretha as a night and day thing. They're both great.

Not exactly the way it happened..

Beyonce introduced Anna Mae a/k/a Tina as 'The Queen'. Aretha in the audience was miffed, though Ms. Knoles was referring to her and out came Tina. Aretha issued a statement via her then publicist about feeling offended by Beyonce. Matthew Knowles issused a statemnt on behalf of his daughter to effect that Aretha needs to not be so petty, that he calls his wife 'Queen' and there is more than one Queen. Tina issued a statement about that is the way Aretha is and always has been. Aretha came back for Tina saying she didn't even know her and who does she think she is to analyst of her.

*****

Franklin dubbed Beyoncé's remark "a cheap shot for controversy." Asked to comment in a USA TODAY interview last week, Turner said, "She's the queen of soul, and I'm the queen of rock 'n' roll. There were so many kings and queens there that night. Her ego must be so big to think she was the only one." She joked, "That's how queens are!"

One queen wasn't laughing. In a statement to USA TODAY, Franklin says Turner "clearly was talking about herself" in terms of ego.

"I never figured her to resort to tacky press just to sell a few tickets," says Franklin, who adds she has never met Turner. "I really had put her in a different class — higher than that.

"No one has been more gracious … to their peers than I have, and I am confident and secure enough to do so, unlike some others."

MATTHEW KNOWLES SAYS BELOW:

"Something this ridiculous – it's childish, it's unprofessional," Mathew Knowles said in a statement Thursday. "And it's a sad day when egos get bruised because somebody used the word king, queen, prince or princess."

I remembered that but I think Beyonce implied Tina was ABOVE the rest of the women that she mentioned. Because if you notice when she named the other legends because she proclaimed Tina as being the QUEEN she made a DISTINCT CONTRAST between them by saying these singers have influenced others etc BUT none other than the Queen Tina Turner... so thats why Aretha was probably offended. She was implying Tina was a queen compared to the rest.

Personally, I tend to like Tina vocally more so than Aretha. Today, Aretha's voice sounds screechy to me. When she won a Grammy for her performance on the Luther Vandross Tribute cd, I was like, "Huh?" I didn't enjoy that performance at all. But, as I've always said, we all like what we like and we all don't have the same tastebuds:)
