Yeah I read so many negative comments giving to Beyonce that night and after Aretha made her statements, most of them were like "GO ARETHA!!! TELL THAT BITCH!" I was actually quite taken back by those comments to be honest.

correct comments, anyway, lol
Beyonce is fuckin' nobody next to Aretha
you guys need to accept that she's just pop candy for the 00s teens. When those teens grow up, that's all folks. Her legacy will not be respected. Perhaps well-known, but not respected.

I know, but there was a certain ANGER that suddenly leash out that night among people who didn't like her to begin with. Of course all of them were like "I respect and adore Tina but COME ON!"
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
it was the righteous anger coming out of the mouths of the 50s/60s/70s/80s music lovers against the late-90s/00s pathetic brats vainandy (or myself) could have been there, lol

I know. | |

If vainandy was in the audience the night Beyonce quoted Tina the 'Queen of Soul'...they would have had to close the place down.

Really hard to make a comparison there, actually.
Aretha was a SINGER in a totally different league.
Tina was an entertainer in a totally different league.
But, for my money, I'd rather hear Aretha.

Tina was accepted by white people in ways Aretha wasn't. If you threw concerts across oceans, Turner's attendance numbers and demographic differences would likely smoke Franklin. She's known for her on-stage style and presence, her figure... In the black community, however, Aretha is Aretha. She has instant respect and credibility. Not only for her voice but what she meant to folks during that time period.
Tina Turner was always a bigger name than her work. How many gems does she really have? Just stop and think about it. Stack up all her supposed classics against Aretha and the two aren't even in the same ballpark. When you get down to the nitty gritty the Queen of Soul wins easily.

and, tina's boldness in going for the rock scene was like taking a giant leap into a world no other black female has dared to go and be successful at it. tina's body rocked. might as well say that she held hands over the waters and stood toe to toe with such greats as mic jagger, david bowie, as well as other great brit rock music men. tina represents "true grit." she has great strength of mind and endure much adversity with the courage to keep moving forward.
i luv tina for her "true grit." “Transracial is a term that has long since been defined as the adoption of a child that is of a different race than the adoptive parents,” : https://thinkprogress.org...fb6e18544a

I prefer both of them in the 60's and 70's but at least Aretha until the late 90's still had her voice and could whip up a smash like A Rose Is Still A Rose. Tina's music was pure shit in the 80's. I can't stand that cheesy ass 80's pop.

Really? I find it extremely hit and miss, much more miss than hit. Ike really had trouble finding decent material to record and most of those albums have far too much filler.

This thread is:
Here's how I look at it, Aretha's box set Queen of Soul: The Atlantic Recordings is roughly five hours of fantastic music, and that's just 1967-1976. Can you compile a five hour collection of Tina's music that comes anywhere near that kind of quality? No, you can't. Aretha wins!
Plus Aretha has a ton of great but overlooked music on Columbia. Give the recent Take a Look: Aretha Franklin Complete on Columbia box set a listen and compare that to the albums Ike and Tina were releasing in the early-mid sixties. Ree wins again!
I'll give Tina credit for arguably being relevent for longer than Aretha but as far as the quality of the material goes Aretha is miles ahead of Tina. No doubt about it.
As a pop star, sure, I'll give Tina the win. But who cares about being a pop star? I want quality music and in that department Tina is sorely lacking.
JoeTyler, do you honestly believe that Tina's recordings are better than Aretha's? If so you and I are going to break things down decade by decade until you realise how wrong you are!

They really take those royalty titles seriously. I remember when Ashanti came out and her labelmates were "crowning" her the Princess of Hip hop/Soul. Mary did an interview and basically said that they had better not forget who the Queen of hip hop/Soul was. I was like, "really?"

And you BEST believe the fans were gonna give her a piece of their mind too. People at the Maryluvs site mostly were all like "fuck her". I remember the controversy over her getting the Aretha award at the Soul Train Awards and Patti LaBelle tried to calm shit down: "let's support our babies".

Aretha's musical output between 1960 and 1985 composes of some of the greatest works in the last 50 years. Tina stands out as an entertainer with, unfortunatly, not that much great musical work. Musically, Aretha and Tina just does not compare.

Not exactly the way it happened.. Beyonce introduced Anna Mae a/k/a Tina as 'The Queen'. Aretha in the audience was miffed, though Ms. Knoles was referring to her and out came Tina. Aretha issued a statement via her then publicist about feeling offended by Beyonce. Matthew Knowles issused a statemnt on behalf of his daughter to effect that Aretha needs to not be so petty, that he calls his wife 'Queen' and there is more than one Queen. Tina issued a statement about that is the way Aretha is and always has been. Aretha came back for Tina saying she didn't even know her and who does she think she is to analyst of her. *****
Franklin dubbed Beyoncé's remark "a cheap shot for controversy." Asked to comment in a USA TODAY interview last week, Turner said, "She's the queen of soul, and I'm the queen of rock 'n' roll. There were so many kings and queens there that night. Her ego must be so big to think she was the only one." She joked, "That's how queens are!"
MATTHEW KNOWLES SAYS BELOW:
"Something this ridiculous – it's childish, it's unprofessional," Mathew Knowles said in a statement Thursday. "And it's a sad day when egos get bruised because somebody used the word king, queen, prince or princess."

I remembered that but I think Beyonce implied Tina was ABOVE the rest of the women that she mentioned. Because if you notice when she named the other legends because she proclaimed Tina as being the QUEEN she made a DISTINCT CONTRAST between them by saying these singers have influenced others etc BUT none other than the Queen Tina Turner... so thats why Aretha was probably offended. She was implying Tina was a queen compared to the rest.
I LOVE BOTH TO DEATH HOWEVER, Aretha gave birth to SOULLLLLL and embodies it. She IS the Queen.

Personally, I tend to like Tina vocally more so than Aretha. Today, Aretha's voice sounds screechy to me. When she won a Grammy for her performance on the Luther Vandross Tribute cd, I was like, "Huh?" I didn't enjoy that performance at all. But, as I've always said, we all like what we like and we all don't have the same tastebuds:)
