Tina's best work was, as much as people hate to admit it, with Ike... she had fine moments solo though. Private Dancer is a classic. Break Every Rule is not so shabby either. | |

She pretty much always had a pop/soul audience, prior to splitting with Ike. My father used to love watching Tina shake when she was with Ike, whenever they were on tv. | |

if you think about it, neither Tina nor Aretha have classic "albums", more like monster-classic singles. But Private Dancer (the album) IS a classic.
Tina's 60s stuff with Ike is still fresh, badass and vital . But her 80s stuff is still fresh and very well-known...Aretha's??? Aretha NEVER had something as big as WLWTDWI or The Best after the 70s...

Yeah technically Tina knew her audience anyways. That's why most of her post-Ike stuff, while mainly pop with rock elements still had strong R&B undercurrents - you can't mistake that voice, one of the original voices of R&B. But yeah she always had a pop-soul audience and my dad loved to see Tina shake too during the Ike days. | |

Aretha DOES have classic albums!
I Never Loved A Man The Way I Love You Young,Gifted And Black Amazing Grace Sparkle Jump To It Who's Zoomin Who
She was never just a "singles artist".
As far as I can see,Tina only had one huge,career-defining album (Private Dancer) and a bunch of similar-sounding follow-ups that didn't do as well. | |

You don't consider these Aretha albums to be classics?:
I Never Loved a Man The Way I Love You Lady Soul (which has one of the baddest Aretha-styled blues cuts she ever did with "Good to Me As I Am To You") Spirit in the Dark Young, Gifted & Black Amazing Grace Hey Now Hey (The Other Side of the Sky) Let Me In Your Life Sparkle Jump to It Who's Zoomin' Who?
Sure her material after that were spotty (in some cases real spotty like What You See is What You Sweat - yecch lol) but obviously she had some GREAT moments during the Atlantic years at least.
As for Tina, yeah her stuff with Ike is still timeless: "Fool in Love", "It's Gonna Work Out Fine", "I'm Blue" (though it was an Ikettes song, Ike & Tina laid their imprint on it, Tina's singing background on that track just so you know), "Goodbye So Long", "River Deep Mountain High", "Bold Soul Sister", "The Hunter", "Proud Mary", "Working Together", "Nutbush City Limits", "Baby Get It On", "Sexy Ida", "Delilah's Power", etc. [Edited 9/30/11 11:43am] | |

Tina is one of those artists that, you can just buy her Greatest Hits and that would be all the Tina Turner you need You don't really need to explore her albums. | |

In terms of delivering the blues, these were their finest moments:
Aretha:
Tina (with Ike):
Their live performance from '71:
---- Honestly, of the two, I always wanted Tina to do a blues album. Maybe when she decides to make one final album, she could make that. I know I know, she said she don't "live the blues" anymore but it doesn't mean you still can't add from your soul to it (she reminds me of Mary J. Blige with her "I'm over the darkness" moments, I guess the music's so deep they don't wanna do similar music anymore idk). | |

@ last sentence in your post--Tina and the girls knew how to 'shake it'. I always found Ike and Tina's music having a blues-rock vibe. Love that type of vibe.

You guys need to accept that Tina Turner is way better than Aretha
someone had to say it
.

Yeah they were definitely blues-rock for real. I think if Tina had really wanted to when she left Ike, she could've had made one. It's still would've allowed her to be the rocker she always wanted to be but I guess her being so used to it, she loved the the vibe from her European peers, which can explain their influence on Tina's post-1970s solo material.
I just posted this song this morning from Acid Queen:

Funky. They added a funk rock vibe to those classics. | |

That was entertainment for a week. I was initially mad at ReeRee but after a while I realized how hilarious it all was and how these two legends probably wouldn't care about either one's status. But it was hilarious when Mathew attacked ReeRee for that lmao I was all like "dude sit down". | |

the heck are Mathew and ReeRee???

That's right "Auntie ReeRee" is the Queen of Soul, and she will make sure no one robs her of that title. When I saw a recent interview with Wendy Williams and Auntie ReeRee, Wendy was 'treading lightly' during that interview because she knew Auntie ReeRee would put her in check with a quickness. I was laughing when Wendy made some comments about something Auntie ReeRee probably would have done, and Auntie ReeRee responded by saying something like "No I wouldn't, but you probably would" and Wendy looked scared and shocked, and segwayed into talking about something else real quick. | |

Yeah Aretha always make sure she had people in check. I loved how she did Wendy. Wendy would be stone-faced once Aretha made her point clear. | |

I remember that, and she pretty much crowned Tina the "Queen of Soul'. I was surprised when I heard Beyonce say that too, because I know, and many of ReeRee's longtime fans know, that Tina is not the Queen of Soul, and this is in no way disrespecting Tina's contributions to music, but everybody and their mama, and anyone else who has any sense, knows that Auntie ReeRee is the "Queen of Soul'...end of story. Beyonce should have known better than trying to strip Aretha's title like that. When I heard Auntie ReeRee made a comment about what Beyonce said, I swore Auntie ReeRee was going to kick Beyonce's ass, and that would have been one heck of a wig and weave-pulling fight. | |

Wendy looked like a deer with headlights and nervous during the whole interview. I'm surprised Aretha didn't tell her to "Sit your ass down girl and relax". | |

and what about Diana, anyway??
does she not have any title????
