FIRST PIC: Jordin Sparks, Tika Sumpter, & Carmen Ejogo Ready Their "Sparkle" Characters

The Sparkle girls are ready for their close-ups! The new Sparkle remake is already in rehearsals, and co-stars Carmen Ejogo, Tika Sumpter, and Jordin Sparks had their first meet-up recently.

Deets and pics inside...

Both Jordin and Tika tweeted pics of the ladies from their rehearsal day in L.A. for the upcoming ‘Sparkle’ remake by Salim and Mara Brock Akil.

Carmen, who's been married to James Bond actor Jeffrey Wright for 11 years, will play the role of "Sister." Tika is set to play "Delores." And Jordin is the lead playing "Sparkle."

Whitney Houston will likely play the mother and Derek Luke will play the role of "Stixx." Omari Hardwick will play "Levi" and Cee-Lo has been added as an opening act role. And R. Kelly signed on for the soundtrack.

EDIT: Post updated with new info from EW.

The big-screen remake of the 1976 film Sparkle just got a bit, er, more sparkly. EW has confirmed that Cee Lo Green, the Grammy-winning multi-platinum R&B singer and mentor on NBC’s The Voice, has joined the cast, which includes American Idol winner Jordin Sparks in the title role of an aspiring music star, and Whitney Houston as her mother.

Carmen Ejogo (Away We Go) and Tika Sumpter (The CW’s Gossip Girl) have also signed up to play Sparks’ sisters, Sister and Dolores; together, the trio rise together in the Motown-era music business as a Supremes-like group. Green will play their opening act, while another new addition, Omari Hardwick (TNT’s Dark Blue), will play one of the love interests for Ejogo’s character. Derek Luke and Mike Epps round out the cast. Director Salim Akil (Jumping the Broom) will helm the film from a script penned by his wife Mara Brock Akil (The CW’s Girlfriends).

Meanwhile, R&B superstar R. Kelly has agreed to write original music for the Sparkle soundtrack.

The film is set to begin shooting next month.

Nothing wrong with the cast, but why are they remaking this? The original is hard enough to watch as is.

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

Sholl was...but I wonder if they'll try to gloss this one up for mainstream appeal? Regardless, I still don't appreciate them remaking it; and with R. Kelly attached to the soundtrack? disbelief

the same reason they remade FOOTLOOSE for a newer generation

Nick Ashford was someone I greatly admired, had the honor of knowing, and was the real-life inspiration for Cowboy Curtis' hair. RIP Nick. - Pee Wee Herman

That's the sorriest excuse that anyone can give (not saying you) about why they do this.

I'm not feeling this remake already. The original gets to me. Lonette Mc Kee singing some Donny, "Giving up......so hard to do, when you really love someone". Deep.

Entertainer

This remake didn't come out of nowhere. This was set to be remade with Aaliyah from 2001 before all of these other remakes. This will be good. That 'giving up' song is deep and i hope that they portray it with all the ethos and trajedy that was done in the original. I have a feeling this remake will be good. Can't wait to see how it will turn out.

funksterr

Some things can't be remade successfully. I cringe thinking about how they gonna autotune up Aretha and Curtis's music.
