...Baby One More Time or Genie In A Bottle?

Defining moments in both womens' careers. Which one did you like the best? I think Genie has the edge. Better melody and lyrics, catchier hook, better vocals.

Genie in a Bottle. My two youngest daughters were big Christina fans and used to play that song and her debut album all the time. Her vocals were on point and the song was very mature for a teenage (wasn't she a teen?) girl. Britney's cool but never really got the hype around her music.

Musically? Genie.

Culturally? ...Baby.

There was just something about Baby that just stood out and it may have been just the video but that video definitely was a cultural moment. I actually remember watching it on MTV when it debut going "you know, that girl may be going places." Next thing I knew, Britney was on top of the world. That's how quick it was.

I remember liking both, but was surprised then that Christina was being given Britney treatment in the media, cause I saw her as an r&b/hip hop artist and Britney as a pop one, but I had no idea they were together on Disney, that's why. I was into r&b/hip hop and not kid shows by then, so I had no clue who they were or what the Mickey Mouse Club was though I had heard of the name in passing.

I like Genie better.

I never saw the appeal of some lame ass typical cheerleader tryna sing.

Genie wins for me. I've always been a Christina fan, I just wish she got vocal lessons and a good ass whooping to fix that terrible ego of hers.

Despite the fact that Genie In A Bottle is musically better, my vote goes to ...Baby One More Time because even till this very day, THIS track still has bite.

Gotta go with Britney on this one. "Genie in a Bottle" is good song, but "...Baby One More Time" was a phenomenon. "What a Girl Wants" is Christina's only great single IMO (well, along with "Beautiful"). The rest is almost completely unappealing to me.

Okay, their second singles...lol

For me, Christina wins again. This really is, along with Genie, one of her catchiest singles. And Brandon Routh is in the video, so... lol

I much, much prefer Britney overall.

But I'm going with Genie... brilliant song.

Three words as to why that track is so good.

DAVID MOTHERFUCKIN FRANK!

Yup, from The System. He produced it.

Yes! He produced this cut from Dream, too (another one of my guilty pleasures...)

Produced it with Steve Kipner. Sorry to be technical but I gotta give credit where it's due LOL. Kipner is a good songwriter and not a bad singer either. I was surprised to see both credited on song as both go waaay back LOL.

Anyway, like I said in my Samantha Mumba thread (which bombed LOL), I quite like some of this late 90's pop music now. I still like both songs, but I gotta go with Britney.

Forget the video as the song stands on it's on. Love the way the verses build and go into that great bridge. Then to top it off the chorus is well worth the wait. The whole song just builds so well.

I wish I could describe it but I dont know the terminology. But the song is just one of those exciting pop songs to me where everything just works! Classic song.
