I'm more of an 808 guy, even though the Linn is a classic. 808 all the way. Check me out and add me on:

The Linn LM-1
[img:$uid]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/d0/Linn_LM-1_Drum_Computer.jpg[/img:$uid]
THIS^ was release a few year BEFORE the Linn Drum. This is the same LM-1 used by Prince, Stevie Wonder, The Human League, Heaven 17, & Stock Aitken Waterman.

Thanks for pointing that out Tony. The LM-1 was the one used on many of the classic Prince tracks.
However, Prince has been said to use the LinnDrum as well as the LM-1. I wouldn't be surprised if he used some of the later models too. It's often hard to tell what he used on the recordings because he hardly ever used the units without outboard processing or tweaking the samples on the units themselves (the basic snare sounds on the Linn units is quite different from what Prince typically used). When he started using those sounds again on Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic he went back to the LM-1 though.

That's a pretty crummy picture.
The colour scheme might be too much for many. I think they are still far more aesthetically pleasing than most contemporary designs that are made entirely of cheap plastic. Replacing the wood ends would probably cost $100+ alone. This stuff was [ı]luxury[/i] back in the day.

Did Marvin Gaye's "Sexual healing" use the Roland 808? Cause if it did, then the Roland 808 sound certainly lasted longer then the Linn drum. Am I wrong?

LM-1 all day long.
I'll take the DMX an DrumTraks over the 808 as well.

The Linn Drum was used on Sheila E Prince eventually moved up to the Linn 9000 between the years of 1985 and 1987. he never used Linn Drum on his own productions though. I'm sick and tired of making plans without making up my mind, teacher teacher can't u see I just need a little time.

LM-1 all the way. I never really did like the 808 sound. I know, blasphemy. I'm just saying...

I used the Linndrum in the "80s and nothing came close to it. The Linn had the "sound" that others couldn't measure up to especially when used in a live band!! The 808 and the revised 909 not to mention the Yamaha drum machines weren't even close to it. I used them all and the Linndrum is king.

This is a picture of a Rev 3 LM-1. The Rev 3s were the last batch of LM-1s manufactured.
The Rev 3s look a bit different than the prevous LM-1s since there were some cost-cutting changes made. For one, the buttons are flush with the unit and not raised like the previous Linns. This makes the unit harder to clean and the buttons harder to replace. The color scheme is a bit differnt, too. The print is more yellow than orange like the originals. Also, the Stop/Play button is rectangular instead of square. I think they used a cheaper wood on the sides, too.
The original Linn's may look like an eye sore by today's standards, but if you look at other recording equipment from that same time period, it's in step with the times. Hell, even the orignal Atari units had orange print with wood accents on the front. "I Was FINE Back in the Day!"

Did he use an LM-2 (LinnDrum) on "Strange Relationship"? I have an LM-1 and an LM-2, and they definitely sound like LM-2 toms at the begining. (The LM-2 toms were "bouncier" than those on the LM-1. Compare the toms in "The Beautiful Ones" with those in the begining of Pat Benetar's "Love is a Battlefield" for example.) I've never owned a Linn 9000, so I don't know what it sounds like, so they could be Linn 9000 toms. Can someone who is familiar with both confirm if it was an LM-2 used on "Strange Relationship"? I'm partial to the Linns, partly for the Prince connnection and partly because they sound more like "real" drums than most other drum machines.
My first Linn was an LM-2. I sent it to Bruce Forat for the snare/sidestick independent tuning mod, and had fun with it, but never really got the classic Prince sound I was looking for.
I was lucky enough to snag an LM-1 afterward on eBay. The guy who sold it runs a recording studio, and he sent me a list of hit songs that were recording in his studio using the LM-1. The one I remember most on the list was Atlantic Starr's "Always". It's cool to think every time I hear that song, that I own the very drum machine that was used in that song. (It's the LM-1 in the picture below.)
I then splurged on a second LM-1 that has the front-panel tuning mod. It also has some toggle switches in the back, so I can switch from the LM-1 to the LM-2 bass/kick sample. I can also switch from the tabourine to a crashier sounding snare.

!
Thank for your comments. Never seen any of these units around here (I suppose very few made their way to Europe). I'm pretty happy with just the samples that I have, but would be curious to get even the (most common) LinnDrum in my hands.

You can lay samples on top of eachother and add effects in them on wavepad, cubase or whatever music edit program you use to somewhat enhance the sound of the samples too.
Samples are good but now without some good tweaking here and there...reverbs are nice and using flanger on them for that Prince sound really helps. Straight Jacket Funk Affair
