I just can not fathom how you can have a rock and roll hall of fame without Kiss. It just proves how snobby the committee is. Kiss were arguably the biggest American rock band of the '70s, if the Eagles and Aerosmith are in then Kiss damn well should be too.
Prince get in the HOF ahead of KISS is one thing.
But Val Halen, Madonna, & ABBA ahead of KISS?!!!? That is total bullshit even till this day.
Van Halen were musically the better band...And made better albums than Kiss....Especially with Diamond Dave...That is all... |

Didn't Gene Simmons "discover" Van Halen at a club in LA and produced demos for them before they got signed? Or something like that..... |

Nope...that's more myth than concrete truth...Gene did indeed shop them to a few labels but no one would bite....It wasn't until Mo Ostin saw Van Halen at the Starwood that they were truly discovered...He signed the band on his own after that.... |

OK, guys, who do you think of this list is shoo-ins, possible inductees, and "never-will-be-inductees":
- Guns N' Roses
- Red Hot Chili Peppers
- The Cure
- Beastie Boys
- Donovan
- Heart
- Joan Jett and the Blackhearts
- The Spinners
- Freddie King
- Laura Nyro
- Rufus & Chaka Khan
- The Small Faces/Faces
- Donna Summer
- WAR
Only five are gonna be inducted, right? These are the five that I would choose:
*Donna Summer---She truly deserves it.She was the queen of dance music in the late 70s,releasing several groundbreaking, influential recordings.
*WAR---they broke alot of ground with their latin-styled funk/jazz/R&B sound. They were blending all these different sounds with ease.
*Heart---I'd very very surprised if these ladies don't get in.
*The Cure
*Donovan
Of course,I want to see Rufus and Chaka Khan get in,but I can wait for next time
The Spinners are my favorite 70s vocal group but for some reason,I don't think they will ever get in. |

I'm still @ Percy's induction. Now that one I don't think was deserved... at all! If anything GNR are like the '80s Sex Pistols: revered for one album (UYI got a lot of mixed reviews upon its release) so I could see them getting in since both of them were credited with "changing rock music" with one particular album. In the Pistols' case it was Nevermind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols, with GNR, it was Appetite for Destruction and that was a 3-year run.
I never understood how the hell Percy got on the ballot, not disrespecting the man but this goes right up there with Del Shannon being in, alot of these "one hit" guys are in especially in that era. And i know its not about hits its about influence, but when was the last time someone said "i was influenced by Del Shannon"?
Nirvana is going in first ballot, long before the more deserving band Pearl Jam, but thats the way it goes.
Omg! I've had the same thoughts about this for a long time. He is essentially a one hit wonder. There are definitely other artists more deserving than him imo. |

I think Chaka or Joan may be the one going in instead of Heart...for some reason. But I'm still rooting for Heart. Who knows with the Spinners but I do think Donovan is a shoo-in, so does the Faces. Who knows with WAR? |

It's funny how he got in for "When a Man Loves a Woman" but if you go on some sites like TUMBLR or YouTube, the song's credited to either Marvin or someone like that. I honestly think "When a Man Loves a Woman" gets TOO much credit sometimes. It's great but not that great. [Edited 9/28/11 9:27am] |

Even if what you write is true, which I do not think it is, it does not matter as Kiss were massively influential. Scores of hard rock/heavy metal bands that came up in the late '70s to the present day were heavily influenced by Kiss. They were arguably the most popular American rock band of the '70s.
Besides, since when did techincal proficiency on your instrument matter? This is rock and roll not jazz! True, Gene Simmons is one of the biggest assholes out there but the rock and roll hall of fame is filled with assholes.
Oh, and Gene is a better bass player than Michael Anthony, or at least Gene writes much better bass lines. Listen to virtually any Kiss song from the '70s and there is a memorable bass line in it. That is hardly true of Van Halen. Go on, I dare you. Name even one Van Halen song with a bass line that is in the same league as Kiss' songs from the seventies. [Edited 9/28/11 11:05am] |

Okay . . . GREEN indicates Shoo-Ins for 2012, BLUE indicates Possibles for 2012/favorites after 2012, RED indicates Never-Will-Be-Inductees. I don't pick these based on merit, most but on my belief that the Hall will try to go for balance. These are my best guesses.
- Guns N' Roses (just a guess, because I get the sense the industry doesn't care for Axl Rose and IMO they are essentially coasting on 1 great album).
- The Red Hot Chili Peppers
- The Cure
- Beastie Boys (because I think '12 slate will be full)
- Donovan
- Heart (only a matter of time)
- Joan Jett and the Blackhearts
- The Spinners (matter of time)
- Freddie King
- Laura Nyro
- Rufus & Chaka Khan
- The Small Faces/Faces (matter of time b/c they're adored apparently for good reason)
- Donna Summer (Disco backlash, 3 decades and counting, the queen pays the price)
- WAR (should and I believe will eventually get in)

Sometimes lesser-known but worthy folks are put in a Hall of Fame to MAKE THEM FAMOUS.
Sometimes stars are put in a Hall of Fame BECAUSE THEY'RE FAMOUS.
I agree with rialb, their fame and impact will count much more than any drawbacks.

Guns n Roses DESERVE to be in. Appetite is one of the greatest rock albums ever and the impact of the band itself cannot be understated. Slash's iconic look and Axl's snake dance defined that band. For a time, along with NWA, Guns were the most dangerous acts in music.
Copied from Davy Jones.

THIS would be the best year ever if they finally put in acts that should have been in 20 years ago! How is Heart not in there yet? Joan Jett?? The Cure??
How in the world didnt the Peppers get in on the first try?????
The Red Hot Chili Peppers is the ONLY old act that is still young. They dont come off like an old act and they are the ONLY act for their last what 3 or 4 albums sell 7-15 million albums EACH! Not all together but in a row, every album for the last 10 years has sold that! They have sold about 30-45 million albums in the last 10 years of NEW music.
Now add the Beastie Boys
... and this would be the best rock hall concert ever! |

That didn't stop the Sex Pistols from getting in with just one studio album.
If GNR does get in, who'll show up? Will Axl be there, and if he does show up would he make demands? This could be like when Van Halen got in and Eddie and Alex weren't there, but Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony were.
Or how about when Blondie got in and they were fighting about who was going to play in the band that night?
The GNR thing is like an ongoing soap opera |

I think Donovan is far from a sure thing. He's been eligible since what, 1990? If he hasn't been inducted over the last twenty years I don't know why this would be the year for it to happen. I think the assholes that make the decisions probably look down on his music and dismiss him as being irrelevent.
As much as I love Kiss it is an even bigger travesty that Alice Cooper is not in there yet. Alice and the original band were hugely influential on just about every hard rock band from the '70s to the present. |
