This is exactly the kind of topic where i predict that people will be mixing up their favourite singers with the most recognizable ones... but the same will probably account for me... lol
So here are 10 from the top of my head:
Van Morrison (my personal favourite, but also very recognizable in terms of volume, phrasing and 'anger') Michael Stipe (REM: part nasal, part southern, part whining, part gravelly) James Blunt (i can't stand this guy, he sounds like some old 'granny'). John Lennon (probably also because of certain recordings 'effects' he did tend to use on his vocals) Whitney Houston (queen of the 'over-singing', using all this useless meandering notes to impress, the same applies to the likes of Celine Dion, Mariah Carey and Christina Aguilera). Louis Armstrong (duh...) Jimmi Hendrix (timingwise.. you immediately notice when someone tries to copy his style, like Prince on Anotherlonelychristmas and Dreamer for example). Mick Jagger (not my style, but very recognisable indeed) Tom Waits (duh...)
Contrary to what others here say i dont think that Prince has a very recognizable style: he uses to sing in such different 'voices' that for a non Prince-fan its hard to tell the guy who sings 'The Morning Papers' is the same who sings 'Black sweat'.
Also Bjork is less unique then i thought before: i have heard several scandinavian singers lately, which i first thought were Bjork. It has something to do with the northern accent combined with a high voice, i guess.

I agree with pretty much everything everyone else has said... this is a very hard topic to narrow down to 10...
But I'd like to add Britney Spears... love it or hate it, she has an instantly recognizable voice.

I quit listening to the radio around 1991, and I don't watch television other than the re-run channel and PBS. Don't have cable, that's a waste of money. Just because something is popular with some people doesn't mean everyone has heard or seen it. It's like people assuming that everyone has a computer and download music, when they don't. I'm pretty sure my mom and grandmother have never heard Brittney either. I've heard and know little about post 80's popular music. If you see the stuff I post, there's very little past the mid 1980's. As far as modern mainstream music goes, I'm like Vainandy "I can't go for that, no can do!". I can understand if u don't like a particular artist, but someone like Britney is a cultural icon. This girl has been on damn-near every magazine cover not to mention all of the high profile appearances she's made (Super Bowl) . I don't get how you can not have heard Britney sing. That's why I ask what planet you're living on.
You do live in the US. Right? **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

Celia Cruz is an icon too. Do you know her music? Do you know about the music of Hank Williams Sr, Little Joe La Familia, Grandpa Jones, Vicente Fernandez, Flatt & Scruggs, Don Ho, Zhou Xuan, Hector Lavoe, Waylon Jennings, Django Reinhardt, etc.? How about non-music people like Nikola Tesla, Wong Fei-hung, Angela Davis, or Sigmund Freud? Depending where you go, all of these people are icons to people. Being an "icon" has nothing to do with music. There's many people that know nothing about The Beatles or Elvis Presley's music. A lot of people have seen Marilyn Monroe posters or other merchandise, but how many of those people have actually watched her movies or bought her records. Just because someone is famous to you doesn't mean that everyone is checking out for them. There's over 6 billion people in the world. I went to school with some metalheads and they wouldn't know anything about top 40 stuff, because that is not what they care about. My grandfather only listened to blues music, mostly country blues. You're assuming that everybody knows or cares about pop culture. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

No, I'm not assuming that everyone "knows" pop culture. It's not about knowing, but recognizing the person if you saw them on a magazine cover. Your father's idea of "pop culture" shouldn't be your idea of "pop culture." That is why I asked you where you lived. I know where you live determines what "pop culture" you're exposed to.
Hell, my father's mainstream "pop" music was Sammy Davis, Nancy Wilson, Ray Charles, Sam Cooke and Jackie Wilson; whereas, mine was MJ, Prince, Madonna, etc.
I "recognize" all of the people you mentioned. Do I know all of their music? No. However, if I saw them on a magazine cover or read about them in a book, I would recognize them.
My original question was not directed to "the world," but to YOU. You are on a message board that is for Prince fans. Prince fans ARE "popular music" fans. To not know who someone like Britney Spears is on a Prince board is a crock of BS. I know Prince fans are diverse, but damn-near every day on this board, there is a thread on Janet Jackson, Madonna, Michael Jackson (before the moderators stopped the flooding of MJ threads) and Britney threads.

Apparently, you can't read. I said I've never heard her music, not that I don't know know what she looks like. Knowing what she looks like is not the same as knowing what she sounds like. I don't look at a thread just because it's there. If it doesn't interest me, I don't look at it. That's why I post about music I like. I don't follow pop culture, because I don't care about it. I don't know why you care about insisting that I should know about Britney's music, when I wasn't talking to you in the first place. It's not that serious. If she interests you, more power to ya.
P.S. - I've seen several people here that say that they don't like Prince at all. I didn't join because of Prince and I rarely go to his section and I sometimes go to the associated acts section, but never go to any of the other sections. Dude first of all, get off your hipster high horse. OK, so you don't listen to Britney. I don't either. What do you want? A cookie? Second of all, this question didn't concern what you heard, it was to everyone on this board. Third of all, you like to rub it in our face that you don't follow pop culture but yet you still can't stop talking about it. Oh you're so real because you're too mainstream for this board. And this board is diverse, sure not everyone listens to Prince but no one's gonna force them to either just like you ain't gonna force all of the ORG to listen to Mickey Dolenz's next record. Plus if you didn't read the board outright, we are quite diverse so stop acting like all folks here are one-dimensional.

What's this all about? I just said that I've never heard Brittney's music. Just a nothing comment, and then the other poster said something about living under a rock and Britney's an icon, she was on a bunch of magazines, and about where I live, which was directed to me and not the whole board. I've never said anything about being real or hip. So I don't understand your comment.
