I didn't pick up on the sarcasm due to the following posts after yours. I singled out the one song that is my favorite from their respective eras. Shout is like a national African American anthem, you can't go anywhere in America and people not know that song. Contagious was apart of the soundtrack to my generation's introduction to Mr. Biggs. Everybody I know loves the breakdown between R. Kelly, Chante Moore & Ron and can recite the words verbatim.
I was going to write in my initial post that I'm such a minor fan of Ron Isley's voice (something about his croon is offputting) and wannabe pimp persona but I thought it was too much and straying too far from the topic at hand. Hopefully this fills in the space for you. I'm very concise and to the point so if you want further clarification, you can always just ask. Stevie Wonder = EARTH

Don't let the soft crooning fool you, Ron Isley used to THROW DOWN back in the day. That's why it wouldn't hurt to do a little INVESTIGATING. THANK YOU!

I just did a little investigating and found out Work To Do which is one of my favorite Vanessa Williams songs is actually from the era before 3+3 so I guess you can add that to the list. Though I only own Vanessa Williams' version and thats the way it'll stay.
I prefer 3+3 because they took their boring gospelized R&B and added textures of rock, folk and funk which made them more appealing to me. Ron Isley's voice still sucks so NO THANKS!! [Edited 9/26/11 20:28pm] Stevie Wonder = EARTH

My vote goes to the 3+3 era from 1973 - 1985.

Technically, didn't the 3+3 really start in 1968 or 1969? The younger 3 just weren't credited as official members, but they were playing on the albums starting around that time. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Ernie had been with them off and on since 1966. I would say around 1970 or 1971 is when Ernie, Chris and Marvin began to add instruments to their material. There was still a lot of outside musicians working with them during the "It's Your Thing" era.

Yeah, I would say that era is at least 1971 - 1985, because I would hate to leave these albums out--The younger three may not be on the album covers , but they're definitely making their presence known here :

I think Brother, Brother, Brother was definitely the start of the 3 + 3 period. Technically it's really 1972-1983 since the 3 + 3 formation splintered in 1984.

Ndeed... well, actually, Givin It Back, too...

It wouldn't be an Isley Brothers thread without this Org favorite:

Their performance was so funny. You can tell there was a bond between Rudy, Kelly and Ron.

Oh yeah Ernie killing it on Ohio/Machine Gun. So yeah you're right. Givin' It Back was indeed the start. I don't count It's Your Thing, The Brothers: Isley and Give Into Something because Ernie played bass on those records and I don't even think Marvin and Chris were in the studio. It was only after 1971 that Marvin and Chris added in their two cents.

I have to mention former Isley Bros backup singers and former music group, JS. I liked them, but they needed more of a stage pressence
