REM Calls it Quits

http://remhq.com/news_story.php?id=1446

Their web site includes individual statements from bandmembers.

Honestly had not heard much from them lately, but they did have a great run.

Judging from their last years, they seemed tired of it anyways but I guess after 30 years they really have nothing else more to say. Wish them well on their future endeavors.

I don't think they were tired the last few records were excellent, it's ironic that Michael stiPe uses the same quote that MAGS of a-ha used when they called it quits, basically saying about it's best to leave a party then be thrown out. The further irony is that I feel both bands had lots more to give as units but sometimes it is better to walk away rather than become a greatest hits touring machine like others have become. To me if u cant do new music on tour what's the point.....example Prince has played 11 new songs on tour in the last 12 years.

Huh. The last album I heard was Reveal. I didn't really dig anything post New Adventures in Hi-Fi. Funny how a lot of folks seemed to lose interest in them after Bill Barry quit the band.

When did they sign that huge deal with WB? Just after Monster?

wow, what a surprise. the last album was pretty decent too

i guess i was lucky to see them a few times live, with 2 or 3 times being released on official dvd. i was also lucky enough to see almost all the shows from front row

hopefully mike will do a solo album and tour and we get to see him in some smaller venues

I was surprised by the thread title. This year's Collapse into Now is a fairly good album and showed a band still inspired and on the upswing. What stood out the most were Michael Stipe's vocals on the ode to New Orleans "Oh, My Heart" --truly haunting and unforgettable. Great musicianship married to almost perfect lyrics. Hopefully, we haven't seen the last of its members.

You know I thought I would be sad, but after a few minutes it makes sense. I really don't know what more REM could do. 30 plus years is a long run and no album has been a disappointment.

I just think they realize that they have run their course. Im sure there will be solo stuff from them in the future, so we havent heard the last of them.

Like rialb, the last thing I heard was Reveal, which seemed mediocre to me. His last great work, in my opinion, is Up.

I can's say I'm sad. But they have made great music.

Well, i would be sad there one of my favorite bands but. As everyone has said they had a hell of a run ranginf from good to great albums but never a total bad one. I think they have written all they can.... so i say more power to them!

No i agree too, mainly because they are from that "band" era, all of my favorite bands came from that time so hearing them call it a day is sad somewhat, but again understood, it wasnt done in a bitter way, which is cool. As a huge a-ha fan i think the way they went out was the best, they tied it together with 25th anniversary, a tour that went everywhere in the world, even the US which wrote them off, and they were riding high on a great record in 2009, to me just about their best, also a top 10 single and top 5 album, great reviews and then one day they announced it was going to be the end. And despite the 3 members not all agreeing at first the deciding vote was to call it quits before it did become a "bitter" ending. I wished REM could have done that kind of final "tour" but again they have been touring nonstop also so i guess they wanted to do it this way.

It's the end of their world as we know it....

Part of the soundtrack of my life.

Collapse Into Now's very decent, most enjoyable REM album since New Adventures for me.

A great band with a great career. Think I'll spin some R.E.M. in tribute.

Yeah i think the sad part when these bands STOP is not so much they are stopping, its the fact that there are no more "bands" coming out that are going to give you a career of music

I'm actually surprised at how bummed I am.

On the other hand, REM have coloured my life with their music for two thirds of my 38 years so maybe I should be upset.

Collapse Into Now is playing now in tribute and the wordless harmonies at the climax of 'It Happened Today' are giving me a lump in my throat. Honest.

At least the music will always be there. Thanks guys. You made me very happy, often.

What I admire about Duran Duran is that they are still hungry, they want to make new music and tour. Some veteran bands just tour but don't record new music.

In REM's case, they seem to be done. Maybe Michael Stipe will make a great solo album.

It's sad that they are breaking up, sad sad but as they said it's better to end it when you feel you have gone as far as you can creatively and not hang on just to be a greatest hits touring band or put out new albums that are pale imitations of your past glories. So I thank them for all the great music they put out over the last 30 years.

It might have been good timing - I loved how Accelerate was a shot in the arm, and Collapse Into Now was a great batch of songs, but I couldn't shake the feeling that the latter was delivered as a career-capsule. I'd hear a song that felt like New Adventures in Hi-Fi, or another song that felt like Automatic For the People. Not to say REM hasn't repeated themselves before, but it felt like an entire album focused on just that.

And I hear where LastDecember is coming from. REM had a poetic career arc, from underground to arena; from making irresistable music to taking it where fans didn't want to follow, from departing from their comfort zone and coming back home again. I don't see this happening again anytime soon. They might be the last of the great American bands.

It's a cliche, and further testamant to the fact that if that's the most poetic thing a lyricist can come up with to describe the end of his lifelong endeavor, then it's time to hang it up.

Got to echo what you guys have said, totally gutted they've disbanded. Didn't get into them until late when I saw them play at Hyde Park in 2005 and realised how much of a great band they are live and then started gobbling up their back catalogue - seeing them live whenever I could. Michael Stipe - great lyricist, great voice, great frontman. Loved the group also for their lack of rock'n'roll pretentiousness and their songs of everyman emotion.

Regards their last two albums, I thought "Accelerate" was excellent ("Living well is the bext revenge" probably my favourite ever REM tune) and "Collapse into Now" a fine record too. Shame - as I only rate Prince as more important to me musically - I wish them all the best for the future and thank them for what they've given to the world.

I haven't heard anything post Reveal but I know that their last two albums received a lot of critical praise but they did not sell much (even taking into account how much overall sales have declined over the last decade). I wonder if maybe they thought "Fuck it, we're doing some of our best work and nobody is paying attention. Why are we wasting our time?"

Honestly I feel that way too, I think that part of it may have been frustrating to get the praise but not the play at all, but I think more than anything the routine may have gotten to them I think they knew going into the latest album it was over.

I think Duran is a different animal bcause it's only been Lebon and Rhodes all the way everyone worse has had time away members have come and gone and their sound has changed constantly, so to me they are different than a-ha and REM on that level. I think REM stayed true all the way all the records were strong statements and people vary in which they dug more but REM to me always delivered good records amazing ones too. I'm glad that REM didn't become a band that just toured with no new music that always bothers me to a degree as does recording new albums and playing one song at a concert from it to me that's when bands get bored and want to pack it in.

What I admire about Duran Duran is that they are still hungry, they want to make new music and tour. Some veteran bands just tour but don't record new music.

Duran Duran haven't been relevent since the '80s, they've been doing the rounds on daytime tv for the last decade or more trying to flog their wares to old housewives who had a thing for them back when. Nowadays LeBon's just a hungry fat fish flailing about on a riverbank. *cheap shot*

I'm pretty sure they'll get together informally, and with Bill Berry when they do. I don't see them completely calling it a day, just creatively. I'm sure some of it's frustration that their new music doesn't have a lot of sales, and just the overall environment of the recording industry.

I remember reading Warners was angry not just with Prince, but with REM after "Monster", because when "New Adventures in Hi-Fi" came out, they "didn't hear a hit". I'm pretty sure they had the same 100 mil deal with REM. And they already rode the nostalgia bandwagon for a bit by playing "the hits" in the past decade. Now, the people who bailed on them in the mid 90s will get the career retrospective and catch up on the past 15 years.

Stipe's always collaborated with other singers, and as a movie producer, has plenty to keep himself occupied with that he'll continue to be working.

The only songs I know by R.E.M. are:

Religion

Drive

Man on the Moon

End of the World

Everbody Hurts

etc....

Just the hits as you can see. What tracks do I need to hear? I've always like R.E.M. just never took the time to look deeper.

Well, they did have a couple of top ten hits in 1993 ("Ordinary World" and "Come Undone").
