New George Benson album "Guitar Man" planned for October release

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Very cool that he's releasing an album that appears to focus on his playing.
It's gotta have some vocal tracks or chances are it's going to BOMB-ay.

^^His last album from 2009 Songs And Stories was mostly vocals, and the one before that was the duet album with Al Jarreau, which was also mostly vocal.

I have Givin' It Up. Enjoyable album.
Saw the two of them perform it live during a Monster (the cable maker) party during the 2008 CES.

This just reminded me at some point to do a post on his pre-Breezin' career where it was pretty much all about his guitar skills.

George made his 1st record when he was around 11 under the name Little Georgie Benson, and he sung with a doo wop group after that.

I wonder where they found that record. I've never heard it before, but George mentioned it in an interview.

I've always admired George Benson as a jazz musician. His singing is good, songwriting is good, but his improvisational prowess is startling, but I've never bought any of his music. His work with Miles Davis in particular is what really got me turned onto his music. I've been sleeping and plan to buy this CD, based on what I've seen from the clip and the press release that's it's mainly an instrumental record. Can anybody recommend some of his best improvisational records?

Man there are some crazy collectors out there.

Cats like Ed Motta have collections that resemble small record stores (remember them? smile ).

Thanks for the reply! I'm definitely going to youtube and listen to some of these records before I purchase. Props.

There's still record stores where I live. One of them also sells used 8-tracks.

Giblet Gravy is a good album. It is very 60's. In some ways it is like Burt Bacharach; it could fit in an Austin Powers movie more than on a Miles Davis album. But his playing is always flawless.

I like his vocal stuff to some degree, but it is like many R&B singers who don't age well (stylistically) as the times change. I have no desire to hear his 20/20 type stuff when he could sit down with a band and play fantastic music, not syrupy ballads.

I am honestly not too familiar with his recent material, such as his album with Jarreau, but Al is another artist who's so capable, but maybe got a little hung up on his pop success and forgot to be the artist he should be. I don't know, though, maybe they inspired each other to do what they do best?

The last Benson album I bought was 2000's Absolute Benson because on it he finally returned to playing serious guitar. Keyboardist Joe Sample pushed him to dig deeper and what emerged was a Benson I had not heard in ages.

Here's a couple of songs from that album.
