Adele is definitly not a mediocre singer. She doesnt yell, she doesnt strain and seems to have technical control of her singiing.
If she isnt your cup of tea thats understandable but compared to many of her peers, she is a good singer.
she is a good singer not great or one of the greatest and the way people talk about how great her voice is, I would have expected more. Thats all
She isnt the greatest singer ever but that doesnt mean she is not a good singer thats all im saying.
I dont think Adele is overrated.
She doesnt win alot of rewards unlike her peers who are undeserving. No one isnt giving her any title. Yes she is popular now but that solely is based on her MUSIC. Not her looks, movies, music videos, marketing tactics etc.. I am happy for her success.. I would much rather her be popular for at least putting out descent music than alot of her peers who put out mediocre songs and just sell their image. I feel her success shows how our society is trying to embrace talent and good music more than popularity and image
^^^ Are you speaking about live performances or just in general?
I think they both sing on key for the most part. Adele has more of a stronger voice though. Janelle voice is more unique and she is able to do different things with it.

In general, but definitely in terms of performing. When Janelle hits certain notes she goes completely off key. Her sing talk songs are less offensive to my ears.
i see it like this, if a person is able to sell the emotion of the song i could care less how many octaves she has. how many did Barry White have? how many does Janet Jackson have? I mean i don't think Amy Winehouse even had that great of a range in terms of octaves.
not getting on you about your opinion or anything but for me, more octaves isn't always better for the situation. quality over quantity and all that jazz.

don't even bring janet into this. NO ONE EVER SAID janet was an amazing singer. She is an entertainer/dancer.
its more of taste, but the only issue I have is, I seen SO MANY people who are able to perform Adeles music just as good as if her sometimes better. So what makes her so special vocally speaking. I know she writes her music so that in itself is a talent.
Im just not impressed with her voice thats all. If I didnt hear so many people saying how great she is of singer, so then im thinking she is like mariah/whitney carey houston or even celine dion, then I decide to listen to a random song of hers and I didn't see what they kept talking about.
I understand why people want to like her all Im saying is for people to not act like she has this extraordinary voice when its not.
ps. I don't care about octaves either I just felt someone of her vocal range should not be getting that music praise for her voice.
i was just trying to tiptoe around the Janet stans with that one...

But you don't get that you're only going to add more drama if you're not careful.
I dig Janelle's voice. It's not perfect but with HER energy I actually don't expect it to be but people like to trash on her because of that.
I don't know what some folks are really looking for sometimes...
It's not about her singing voice, which I think is quite nice tbqh, but it's more of her technique. It is possible to sing a song and hit the notes correctly, especially when you are standing still and singing. If she can work on that I am pretty sure she will find way more success than she is right now, at least in the US. Right now I think she's all gimmick. Adele is less gimmicky and she sings better.
To each their own, but those who are saying she has an ok voice need to get out more. She has a very good voice, writes honest lyrics people can relate to, and her songs appeal to multi-generations. Unlike most "pop" music out there...the singers can't sing without autotune, the songs have no melody or structure, and the music is plastic and only appeal to teenyboppers . It's nice to see an artist with actual talent, creating appealing music that people are diggin.

This is one of those "i'm not even sure I should respond" kind of threads.
Because upon hearing Adele for the first time I got goosebumps and was like "damn". It was IMMEDIATE.
So, I guess you either get it or you don't?
To echo what a lot of other people have mentioned, she's a singer/songwriter of incredible talent and soul for her years. That's what I love about her. I gotta admit, I even have a bit of a crush. And i'm not into big girls. But with that voice? DAMN.

Basically... her peers such as Beyonce and Rihanna are WAY more overrated than her

Every other year, the music industry finds some dowdy, decidely unsexy, underdog female singer, who is as pedestrian as sin, to rally behind and exploit in a bid to seem less shallow and more 'credible' than the year before. Susan Boyle, Amy Winehouse, Sara Bareilles, Norah Jones, Paula Cole, Joan Osbourne, etc., etc. Adele is just the latest in a long line of middle-of-the-road 'Plain Jane' coffee-house singers who the industry is trying to play Cinderella with for 15 minutes.
I'm not at all convinced that Adele isn't some passing fad, and that the majority of her 'fans' aren't lemmings who like her simply because she's 'the one to like' this year. That many of the comments supporting her have as much to do with her supposedly being 'refreshing' because she's isn't model-esque or sexy as her music tells me that it's as much about "image" for her supporters as it is about any other female singer.
...but I will say that even if I'm not at all impressed by Adele's actual shtick, if there's one thing I *do* appreciate about her is that she's upstaged Gaga and cock-blocked her from being the years center of attention -- which is clearly what her camp was plotting.

the only thing that will make your "argument" somewhat plausible is you providing examples of what you think is "relevant". Knocking all of the singers you've listed isn't a crime, but not explaining who you think is "better" is kind of bush league. i'll put Adele/AmyWinehouse/Norah Jones above most of the bullshit that passes for "relevant" i.e. (Gaga, Swift, Rihanna, whothefuckever).
so who exactly are you dick riding for? that will explain EVERYTHING.

That's what I pegged her for when I heard "Chasing Pavements" when she first came out. She clearly was riding in the wake of Amy's success. I thought she'd disappear. This album 21 proved me wrong. She's dominating around the world this year and is having exceptional success. I hope she's enjoying it because it will be impossible to sustain.

Personally, I feel that anytime your gimkmick makes more noise then your actual art...it is a bad thing. I mean, it is cool that you have influenced people style-wise, but as an artist, I think that you have failed yourself greatly.
I mean, every artist out there has a gimmick of some sort. You have to otherwise how would you makrket yourself? In her case her quirkiness IS her gimmick. The hair, the pantsuits, the clown dancing...that is her gimmick.

I understand where your coming from but correct me if I'm wrong but what I got from your last post was that she sales here gimmick MORE than her talent and music which is completely not true. I can name 5 other artists that sales a gimmick MORE than their music.
Shes talented and she makes pretty good music. To me, she seems to sale that more and care about that more than her image. Because if she did just care about saling a gimmick her music would reflect that but it doesnt.

Yeah I don't get how she supposedly sells more gimmick than talent because when I hear her (and see her perform) I don't see much of a gimmick, I see someone who put her blood, sweat and tears into anything she's done and that's not gimmick, least to me.
