Hunky Dory is my personal favorite....

Whenever you say that you can't, that's when you need to be trying.

I would also highly recommend 'The Man Who Sold the World', 'Aladdin Sane' and 2002's 'Heathen.'

Use the 'best of' cd as a guide. What tracks do you like from it? Get the corresponding album/s.

Like Prince himself, Bowie has played a wide range of musical styles. So I guess it depends on which style you prefer.

- Folk, then start at the beginning, with Space Oddity.

- Glam rock, then Hunky Dory, Ziggy Stardust or Aladdin Sane. The former is more poppy, with an overall acoustic sound, the second is more rock oriented, and the latter shows a transition to his white soul years.

- Soul, then Young Americans or Station To Station.

- Experimental, electronic, Krautrock, then Station To Station, Low or Heroes.

- Commercial (but great) pop-funk, then Let's Dance.

- If you like to start with something more recent (why not?), then Heathen would be a good option. I prefer Outside, but it may be too much for a first choice.

But, to give a unique (almost) recommendation, starting to know Bowie with Hunky Dory or Ziggy Stardust icould be the best option.

Here are some to try from the 70s/80s era:

Ziggy Stardust

Young Americans

Scary Monsters

Lodger

Let's Dance (I know it's a pop album, but I still think it's good!)

90s/2000s era:

Earthling

Outside

Reality

Heathen
