Always LOVED "Holding Back" (in any version)...just a flat out great song.
"Maybe Someday" from '87 was good, too. [Edited 9/17/11 18:21pm] Funk Is It's Own Reward

Simply Red is one of my Top 10 favorite artists/bands of all time.

Why do you all think that is? There came a time when the risk of remaining tight in the bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom. Anais Nin.

Promotion here was dismal at best?

Do you think it was hard to people to accept a very pale redhead doing music like this? I don't know for sure, just throwing it out there.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
i think there are/were a few reasons why. as Timmy said, lack of promotion being one. also, i think the landscape of popular music was changing fast as acts like Simply Red and if I may throw in Lisa Stansfield were reaching a peak if you will. i believe their sound was not as appreciated in other territories after a certain time as they were at home in the U.K. even George Michael for that matter. and as far as the comment about how Mick looks, (pale skin etc..), no, i don't think that's a factor. not when it comes to lack of sales. i think it was beneficial to them actually. there were several soul/uk soul acts that suffered. legends in my bok either way.
classic 90's for me. Simply Red and Lisa Stansfield.

American audiences had always been following whatever trend the label was pulling. This is why I got more love for audiences overseas, they keep that kind of music popular. Not saying America's the only country that follows trends but it seems to do it at a more blinder rate than other countries, especially compared to the UK where Mick & Lisa continued to have success after their American successes peaked.

Damn, I'm loving the Simply Red 12" version. I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

That is my favorite as well. Since I came on this thread the first time this song keeps playing in my head over and over again. It is not a bad thing, just saying that's been happening lately - a lot. There came a time when the risk of remaining tight in the bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom. I remembered when I first heard of it four years ago because, first of all, I had no idea a 12" versoin of a ballad existed (but that's my naivete that was kicking in then) and when I did hear it, I couldn't stop playing it. It's just deep.

Hey, yeah, that's crazy. I really like that 12" mix. It's really nice. Like the original, only better. Heh. :

The beginning of the original is classic lol
I loved Randy Crawford's version of it.
