Music from where you live, let's discover it

I may be wrong, but I feel we just hear about the same international artists and many think that music is boring, too mainstream and plastic. And since some of the music you enjoy may not get that same level of broadcasting, I'd like to know which artists from where you live you think are good. No I'm not gonna put Celine Dion even if she's from the province wink

First, they are actually well known, the group is called Simple Plan, and their duet with Marie-Mai. I'm not a fan of Marie-Mai much, but she does seem to really enjoy what she does, she has talent and incredible energy. As for Simple Plan, if you don,t know them, check on youtube some of their song, some of them are really nice.

This song is a hit at the moment. They also did an english version with Natasha Bedingfield.

Next is a group called The Repectables, they are from my city and they've been doing their thing for more than a decade now. I really enjoy some of their songs, they got quiet recently, and their last album didn't make it as well as the others, and it's much more like 'save the planet' stuff. Even if we speak french here, I usually don't enjoy french music, but I enjoy theirs. They have that kind of Aerosmith's ''we're always be teenagers'' style, I think I like it.

That's my favorite from them, called ''Ma vie à l'heure''

Another one I enjoy, I don't own any of his albums, or any from his previous group called Okoumé, but I actually always enjoy when his songs are played, the texts are really good, sang in a 'quebecer' way, not in a 'french' way. The guy is true.

Here's the video for the song 'Le Kid'. The video shows and talks about my city wink

This is a group called ''Loco locass'. They do VERY socially and politically engaged rap, they magically play with words to say what they have to say, this is like today's spoken poetry, they became quickly respected (and disliked by politicians...). I'll put the video that actually shows the lyrics, so for those here who speak french, they'll be able to follow a little.

The song is called ''Libérez-nous des libéraux'' (Liberates us from the Liberals)

Please share some of the artists from where you live so we can discover a little more music smile

Nice stuff, thank you... or should I say merci?

I don't speak French and didn't know there was a difference between that and "Qubecer" so it was lost on me but I like the video... a lot! Wish I had a girl who wanted me that much.

I did very much enjoy your selections and the cartoon brought back a few memories from my only trip to Montreal in 1970.

I liked how they went back and forth from French to English in the first one and how the guy could sing in both languages.

I have a good friend who worked as an engineer, producer and mixing/mastering expert in Montreal in the 80's and 90's. He engineered on Celine's first album when she was very young and some after that too. He works down in Toronto now. This year he won a Juno (=Canada's Grammy Awards) as co-producer, engineer, mixer for the Best Tradtional Jazz album category.

He turned me on to a blind blues artist from Montreal named Bryan Lee that I really like a lot. Do you know of him? He plays pretty much full time down in New Orleans now (big French influence there) but comes back home to Montreal now and again.

Here he is playing on a Montreal TV show with another guitarist who I hear is pretty famous up there too, Michel Cusson.

I'll contribute the two I think are the best from the Albuquerque / Santa Fe areas of New Mexico. There's a lot of history around here. Santa Fe where I live celebrated it's 400 year anniversary this summer.

This is The James Douglas Show, a funkrock band from ABQ who have been together for about 10 years. They were an excellent covers band for a long time but in the last few years have developed some excellent original material and had 6 Grammy nominations in 2009. They're the house band for a local late night TV show called The After After Party hosted by HBO breaking Bad star, Steven Michael Quezada.

They always rip it up at their live shows too. Big fun, great energy. They have a new album coming out soon and some money behind them now with a few new high production value videos and a smoother sound than in the past.

I hope they don't get too far away from their grittier funky sound like this one which was the hit single from their 2008 release, The New Black.

This next artist is Ryan McGarvey who started messing around on the guitar at age 2. He's only in his mid-twenties now and beginning to really make a name for himself, think Stevie Ray Vaughn / Jimi Hendrix level playing. I think he's just come back from touring in Europe.

This clip is a few years old but I'm including it because it has a lot of footage from this area of the US so its going to be a little bit of a travelogue for you as well as hearing two songs from Ryan. He just keeps getting better and better.

Great idea for a thread, carinemjj. Enjoy!

Thanks hug

I really enjoyed both your artists, James Douglas Show does have funk and Ryan, talented... AND a cutie wink And thanks for the travelodge, looks like Disneyland's Frontierland smile Looks beautiful! Congrats on your 400th too! We (Quebec City, not Montreal) celebrated our 400th in 2008. smile

I didn't know about Bryan Lee, thanks for putting him there smile

tA, good stuff there. I was particularly impressed that The Big Payback could be made to sound so good without a horn section. Also liked the bass player's solo at the end of Mr. Clean; tasteful playing and the small club atmosphere was a nice little extra to the music. I should get out more but unfortunately our best club was recently shut down due to tax difficulties.

That was classic.

She used to be a lot more, shall we say, active onstage.

Diving into the audience and stuff. Probably a holdover from her 80s act.

However after a broken leg and a few sprained ankles, she seems to have toned it down a bit.

Sitting down and appears to have her foot elevated with an ankle cast in the first clip...

That's a famous music club in L.A. called The Baked Potato.
It's a super small joint that's more of a "musician" club.
A favorite spot of named players that just want to go somewhere and play what they want.

It opened in 1970 and recently celebrated its 40th anniversary with a BIG BASH.

To accommodate a larger crowd, they had it at a nearby open air venue - The John Anson Ford Ampitheatre.

Ton of cool photos here: http://picasaweb.google.c...directlink

A band I was in during the 80s had the dubious distinction of having the place closed down for a while.

Directly across the freeway is the Hollywood Bowl and the patrons didn't appreciate our high decibel Rock music disturbing their Classical music concert that night.

Since San Fran is considered the hub of The Bay Area but isn't the whole thing, I'll add some from all of the area. An alt group that had a minor regional hit in 06 but IMO should get wider love nationwide are The Lovemakers:

the hit song

I'm sure she's an Org favorite even though I haven't heard anything new form her, Goapele.

willfully excluding her well known hit song, you know it anyway...listen to something different.

There's a thousand more artists I could add but there's only so much room and I won't act like I've heard everything out there. Enjoy, I'll come back with more.

I'm glad more orgers are picking up on this thread.

UncleGrandpa, I love your whimsical screen name! Can't say it without laughing. lol

The Lovemakers had a nice edge to their stuff.

tA, That Cafe R&B is a tight unit that can really find the pocket and groove! Loved 'em.

Both those cuts were killer even if Roach was off on lyrics and cues on There Was a Time. She was totally classy on the the blues number.

Scratchin' my head though on why she would ever want to use the stage name, Roach.

So you got the Potato shut down, eh? What the heck? Did you bring your Marshall stack into the club that night? cool

In this part of the country we have a centuries long history, oftentimes not so nice, of the conflicts of the various peoples who fought for control of the area.

Today the indigenous peoples of the Pueblo tribes, the descendants of the conquistador Spaniards, indians of Mexican descent who moved north to escape them and the results of influence of white "settlers" on the area all live together in a semblance of peace.

One man who keeps the pride and spirit of his people in the fore is Grammy winner Robert Mirabal of the Taos Pueblo tribe.

Here he is in a full blown production of his Music From a Painted Cave stage show filmed for PBS.

And here is a more relaxed live show at the annual Gathering of Nations where indegenous peoples from all across the country and even the world come for a big pow wow.

Another local indian band is Native Roots who adopt a reggae sound for their songs keeping their people's story alive.

These guys are always good for bringing everyone's spirits up at their live outdoor shows.

You know, i've never asked her about that name. My guess it's a childhood nickname that stuck.

I'm gonna try and check out their upcoming gig at Harvelles (another cool small club).

I want to introduce a band, which comes from Ulvila, Finland:

http://www.youtube.com/wa...0fwXRrigPY

Disco Ensemble is a very promising postpunk indierock band. From the same province, where I live, comes also Maj Karma, which sings only in Finnish (sorry). This video though doesn't need words:

http://www.youtube.com/wa...SKYMLmnXy8

Its' name is Ukkonen (Thunder) and it tells about living the life in extreme and the people who tell you shouldn't. wink

Being an old bag (40+) I also need to mention 22Pistepirkko:

http://www.youtube.com/wa...r6a4J0wI5g

and Sielun Veljet, whose song Rakkaudesta was voted for the best Finnish rock ballad ever:

http://www.youtube.com/wa...rbiRBDHwrU

Anyhow, I would have nominated Dave Lindholm anytime too. His minimalistic lyrics are even more impressive with his soulful guitar.

There are many great memories and gigs I have seen, so let me finnish my set with this energetic performance of Melrose from the late '80s

http://www.youtube.com/wa...3iMHxEx10I

biggrin Please see their "Loverboy" too if you want to check how these men have aged. biggrin It is simply delicious...
