Spirituals & Gospel

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I can't really listen to this stuff. It's always made me think of funerals and death ever since I was a kid.

^^^Sam is my mom's favorite singer. Johnnie Taylor replaced Sam in the Soul Stirrers when he left to sing secular music.

I thought Lou was in another group, not the Stirrers. Maybe the Highway QC's, not sure.

This is teenaged Johnnie Taylor singing lead on this Highway QC's song from 1955. Sam Cooke was also in this group. They were both in the QC's (but not at the same time) before the Soul Stirrers. I looked it up and Lou Rawls was in the QC's too.

Wow Micky you sure covered a lot of ground with your videos. One of my favorite movies "Oh Brother Where Art Thou" featured some old school spirituals.

Here's one that I discovered years after it was released from The Winans when they were on Quincy Jones' label. Marvin Winans vocals @ 5:16 gets me everytime. So soulful and smooth.
