I'm IN.

I went for the obvious didn't I? lol

Its funny, even though I LOVE this instrument, I don't know many musicians who played it outside of the Hamp, Roy and Red. Its much like the celeste, I love it but I don't know many musicians who played it, other than Fats Waller & Ray Charles who played it occasionally, if not rarely.

Oh, tA. You try sooo hard to edumacate us no matter how hard we resist. Its nice to know that someone can speak beyond Beyonce's baby and who would win in an armwrestling contest between Lady Gaga and Adam Lambert. wink

Appreciate the sentiment BK but it's really not my intent to try and "edumacate" anyone...lol

I just try and post up things I like that are different than the standard fare.
And to tell you the truth, I learn from it while doing the research.
I knew about the instrument and the most well known players attached to it, but I had no clue about Gunter Hampel or Andrei Pushkarev until I got into putting the post together.

Now I do have a small place in my heart for Lambert since a drummer I play with did a stint with him for about a year and a half up until recently.

Sir Neal, can you identify this tune from the Hamp? Mark @ 2:35.

I've been trying to remember its title, I wanna say its featured in the Lionel Hampton Story box set but I'm not sure.

Much obliged. You have no idea.

Wow! drool I know posting this might break the pace of this thread but damn, I had to bring this up lol music

He even plays the piano like he plays the vibes, if that makes sense. He's SO good at it, I got confused between him and Nat King Cole(who played in a couple of sides for him early in his career - which is featured in the box set I mentioned earlier). Great stuff.

Did someone ask for obscure? smile

Ruth Underwood with FZ (you gotta wait till 4:20 for her part but you get some prety decent Jon Luc Ponty on wah wah violin and Frank doing an atonal guitar solo for your trouble).

Be Bop Tango was probably one of Frank's least accessible songs (I doubt if anyone but him could hum along).

OK, your reward for making it through that one is this one from one of my top favorite FZ lineups with Ruth on vibes, percussions and duck call, George Duke on keys, Chester Thompson on drums and the amazing talent, Nopolean Murphy Brock on sax, lead vocals, theatrics and dancing.

Florentine Pogen

For those of ya'll who just can't get enough behind the music type triva, here's a nice piece on Ruth's reflections of the early days of being in the band. Somehow FZ snagged her from her purely symphony playing experience and she would never be the same. lol

Cool. Ruth in Zappa's vintage 70's bands was the first thing I thought of when I first saw this thread.

I wonder who we could best describe as the 'Jimi Hendrix of the vibes', if there be such a person in music history wink

Ruth's not obscure...to many wink
Thanks for bringing her up. I was saving her for later because of a few connections.

...Rollo Interior & The Mallets of Invention

This brings back a ton of memories. A few of them.

1. Being invited to observe a Mother's Of Invention rehearsal at the Garrick Theater by Frank Zappa himself.
2. During the 80s, the bass player in the band I was in, met/dated and eventually married Ruth Underwood.
(unfortunately, they're no longer together)

Well, no, I didn't mean Ruth was obscure, just the tune Be Bop Tango played in that disjointed freejazz arrangement.

By the way, the guy playing the clarinet in that video was Ian Underwood who played woodwinds and keys for Frank. He and Ruth (nee Komanoff) were married in 1969 and divorced in 1974. I don't know if Ruth was brought to the band by Ian but I don't think she was ever credited on any records under her maiden name.

So what was that Garrick rehearsal like?

At the very end of that interview footage when Dweezil is playing in unison with the vibes player, in the background you see stepping up to the mic, none other than Mr.Napolean Murphy Brock.

Strangely enough I found this video coming from another direction entirely. I occasionally exchange emails with a friend of mine who is a music teacher at Mt. Holyoke college in MA and we exchange "what new musicians have you discovered lately?" messages.

He sent me this link to the Matthew Barley Ensemble and lo and behold, who was in it? Andrei Pushkarev but this time playing fusion on a Weather Report cover:
