Pet Shop Boys: Fundamental

I've been thinking a lot about Pet Shop Boys lately, partially due tu Gunsnhalen's threads. wink Today I've decided to re-listen to Fundamental, their 2006 album.

I've wanted to create a thread about it to know what Pet Shop Boys' fans in the org think about it, and to recommend it to those who haven't heard it. It's an album that doesn't belong to the band's canon (from Please to Very) and therefore can be ignored by some.

I love this record. It has a melancholic tone that reminds me of the extraordinary Behaviour. Actually, you can find in Fundamental two of the saddest tunes you'll ever hear: I Made My Excuses And Left and Luna Park. Slow and introspective tunes predominate in the album, but classic Pet Shop Boys dance songs can also be found, and awesome ones; Integral, for example, has one of the best choruses the duo has ever composed.

Fundamental is, actually, fundamental.

What do you think?

I love Fundamental, one of my favorite Pet Shop Boys albums. Great ballads, as you already mentioned, but great dance tracks, too: Minimal, Psychological

I agree. Both tunes you mention are brilliant. Psychological has Kraftwerk all over it... It's great.

This album and the next one, Yes, are, in my opinion, among the best Pet Shop Boys records. But the problem is that they don't belong to their "golden era", when they were successful and in fashion. Therefore, these records will never get the recognition they deserve: for the majority, Pet Shop Boys are an 80's act and that's it. How wrong: in the last 5 years they have made an impressive return to form.

great record, one of their stronger releases in my book.

that "where angels fear to tread" line is one of my favorite ever lines in a song, then again, they rarely ever disappoint in that department.

"what's that book where they're all behind the wardrobe?"

Yes, they always have written good lyrics. Neil is a literate pop star, which I like a lot.
