The Group Surface Salsoul Years

Yesterday while in the VA Thrift Store, I came across a bunch of promo 45s. I dug through there and found several good 45s for 25 cents a piece. I stumbled across the promo "Falling In Love With You" from the group Surface. I had no idea Surface was originally signed to Salsoul. When I got home, I played it and was surprised to hear a female voice. Does anyone know how big the group was? Were they similar to Atlantic Starr?

Here is "Falling In Love With You." (I could only find the 12in version on Youtube)

Here is "When Your Ex Wants You Back" from Surface, also on Salsoul.

I heard one of their early songs years ago. I've never seen a picture of them, but I don't think Bernard Jackson was in the group then.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I've been searching for pics or an LP and can't seem to find one online. All I see are 3 singles. hmmm

^^Maybe they had a contract to only make singles, not albums.

Maybe so.

Then again, Salsoul was not a typical record company at the time. They released a LOT of singles from acts that never released an album.

Maybe they pressed these singles for the clubs? That's what they sound like.

So did Sugarhill Records. Most of their releases were 12" singles only. They were not 45 singles either as their songs tended to be too long for a 7". I did once see a 45 labeled "For jukebox use only" for Rapper's Delight though. It was on a plain red label, not the usual light blue with the logo on it.
