As an ethnic minority in England living in the inner-city..... if you don't think there's SERIOUS race issues in this country you have no fucking idea.

And yes, the riots were race related. A black man in London was shot dead by police officers for no reason and that's what triggered it. This is not the first time, there have been dozens of such cases, and dozens of black deaths from police brutality, both in jail and on the streets. There's so much racial profiling it's unreal and the conservative government is making things a LOT worse.

There is also a lot of inter-racial problems, ie Asian communities VS Black communities..... Three Asian guys were murdered by a black guy at the peak of the riots because they were trying to defend their businesses from the looters.

I have lived in this country most of my life, was born and raised here, and things have NEVER been worse than they are right now in regards to race. So this Kelis story doesn't surprise me at all.

Yes, but in terms of the world it is not that bad here. I hate it when people who have the benefits of living here try to do it down. And to be fair inter-racial problems (ie asians fighting blacks) is not the fault of our country.

It is tolerant but it doesn't mean there is no racism, speaking as someone who spent my formative years in London. Infact the racism in the UK IS buried quite deep and therefore it is not obvious to anyone , who hasn't lived and worked in UK, who is not blACK. But if your black and you have lived and worked in the UK you will see how it is swept under the rug.

Quite frankly the success of someone like Oprah, Obama and even Mj would NEVER happen in the UK. As a black person in the UK you can really only go so far. Don't let the huge number of mixed relationships fool you to think there is hardly any racism in the UK.

[Edited 9/14/11 13:58pm]

Respectfully disagree...

Well I am talking as someone who has lived and work there and most importantly I am a black woman.

Seems like London has class issues which almost always involve race and economic status. I don't live there but I'm willing to bet my life's savings that its no paradise with racial harmony.

nod But for some reason we're supposed to believe they are exempt or unaffected by racism when England instituted MOST of the shit through colonization and is STILL reaping the benefits. Please. talk to the hand

As for Kelis situation, I would be disappointed too if people around me witnessed me or someone else being racially attacked/insulted and did/said nothing.

Now you are being ridiculous...don't forget the UK was the first to abolish slavery, it took 60 more years for the Americans to abolish it!!

falloff No, honey, it is YOU who are being utterly ridiculous and backwards in your comments. But I'm used to people on the Org who are not black informing black people and other minorities we don't know what we're talking about when it comes to race issues that affect US. Those opinions still don't mean shit to me, so run along with your lunacy. wave

London is definetly a charming place and no, it is no way as bad as South Africa was up to 20 years ago or the deep south in the States up to 40 years ago. But there is alot of institutionalized racism in UK and it is seen most in the work place. The racial politics that go on in the offices in the UK is quite bad. It is really about "if your face fits" to how high you can go.

Plus, the Brits actually started slavery too. So it is just if they abolished it.

True, but there is not that kind of pretence in America that there is hardly any rascism and that is what Kelis is saying. What she has said is obvious to most black people who actually live or have lived in the UK: the rascism in the UK is swept under the rug.

And you really need to butt out and get a passport...so you can have opinions with some conviction rather than speaking out of ignorance on world affairs.

The race issues in London are small fry compared to parts of LA or some Southern states, and if anyone is oppressed it is the whites!!

What fucking planet are you living on? England isn't racism, but if it is it's the whites that are oppressed?!. GTFOOHWTFB!

The fact that you visit the UK means shit, unless you live it day in and day out you don't know it.

I have had polish immigrants who have been here in London 5 minutes call me, who was born here nearly 40 yrs ago, a 'Slavery immigrant' and make fucking monkey noises like their being fucking clever with that shit, just cause their skin is white. Or white chicks who are happy enough the lay down with a black man but wanna call me nigger, like it is their right. Fuck that, they stop chatting that rubbish right quick when I put an elbow to their throat!

Racism is not a comparison game, the fact that it may be worse in LA or southern states of the US is neither here nor there.

"I know that living with u baby, was sometimes hard...but I'm willing 2 give it another try.

^The fact there are so many Polish and other immigrants here is testament to the fact they see it as a safe place to live and work and make money. If they don't like it they can always return home but they don't so it must have something going for it..

I very much doubt someone in that position would have said that to her...i mean they are used to dealing with ALL races under the sun!

In my experience, they aren't like those big fat PIGS in US Immigration who get a kick out of humiliating people..and most of the passport officers here are actually non white anyway.....perhaps the officer was non-white...did u think of that? Or did u jump to racist conclusions about white people?!

Jumping the queue means she deserves to have someone call her names, they couldn't have just said go to the back of the queue!! Also given that a passport officer, is for some people, the first person they meet in a foreign country this creature should have acted better.
