Jeffrey Daniels (Shalamar) amongst other dancers were doing the "moonwalk" before MJ. He just named and patented it... so it's more than 20 years old now.

True. I first saw folks in LA doing the moonwalk back in '78. It might be older than even that.

From the TV guide interview in 199:

TV Guide: What's your favorite song to perform?

Michael: "Billie Jean", but only when I don't have to do it the same way. The audience wants a certain thing. I have to do the moonwalk in that spot. [Laughs] I'd like to do a different version.

Remember that in the interview, it was Bashir who asked him to show him the moonwalk. It was Bashir who asked him about Billie Jean. He courteously answered his tired old questions. If people want Michael to talk about something else, they better f**king well ask him about something else.

Michael himself has always stated that he didn't invent the Moonwalk. He said he saw street dancers on the street doin' it... they showed him how 2 do it, and he incorporated it in2 his act.

People please... rolleyes

Fred Berry from "What's happening" was Popin&Moonwalking back in 1976.I even heard that Billy Preston did a show back in 73&did it Himself.but I think MJ caught People off Guard with doing at Motown 25 as part of the Greatest Performance On TV that I Ever saw a Artist do&It blew folks away that Night.but the Dance was also called the Glide back in the late 70's.a Cat from Solid Gold can't think of His Name worked with MJ on the Moonwalk.Jeffrey Daniels did Hook MJ up with some steps more so on the Bad Tour&Videos.

Was it really that tragic for you?

Not for me, it only reminded me of who all these kids--Usher, Sisqo, Justin Timberlake, B2K, Ginuwine, etc.--are emulating with their moves today. It may be 20 years old, but ppl are sure jockin these newbies like THEY original.

Nothing new under the sun. What's doin has already been done.

I used to watch my brother and his friends break dance, so I saw that move prior to that motown special, or whatever show it was where Michael first did it.

YOU'VE GUESSED INCORRECTLY, MINNEAPOLISGENIUS.

Here's what you've stumbled upon:

Forums > Music: Non-Prince
Discuss other artists here.

And guess what. There's every chance you'll see other artists discussed here - including even, Michael Jackson.

Yes well, obviously this is the forum to discuss artists other than Prince, but I guess you're only allowed to speak your mind about Michael if you're going to kiss his ass. Anyone who has said otherwise has been flamed by people like you. no no no!. People seem to have strong opinions one way or another about the whole Michael Jackson thing, but I was just a little surprised by people adamantly defending his crazy ways.

I myself tend to disagree with people who say things like this:

To be fair, if you're a member of the hardcore elite MJ fanclub a little gathering like on this board (aside from his own personal websites), offers up a welcome little sanctuary away from the general routine of abuse in Jackson's direction I suppose...

MINNEAPOLISGENIUS:

Without prejudice, I only crawl out of the woodwork to air my opinion on Jackson when inaccuracies are trumped as fact, or simply to debate from the reverse side of the coin. I'm yet to flame, burn, or even douse anyone who's opinions differ from my own. innocentmr.green Come to think of it, I've never even started a thread in his name! (I guess the MJ Police will demand my licence be revoked.) rolleyes wink

Again without prejudice, (as I don't hold brief for FunkyBrotha) it would be unreasonable for me to comment on his behalf. However, I do feel we can discuss these matters and share opinions without the use of invective as seen above.

Yes!!! Actually it was Jeffrey Daniels, from Shalamar, that taught MJ the pop-lock/moonwalk dance steps in the early 80's

I'm here in the South. And me and buddies were pop-locking and moonwalking in 1980. By the time 1983 came, that style was pretty much "played out" {southern slang for outdated or out of style}. But what happened in 1983 was Mike turned "squares...mainstream people" onto this "new" dance.

Make no mistake about it. Mike's a natural dancer. That's his gift. Mike can take a basic dance step and induce various variations of that same dance. I still love to see the different variations and combinations of the electric boogaloo-moonwalk he does while peforming "Billie Jean".
